Humping the Air?

In the last few weeks, every once in awhile, Clyde stops whatever he's doing to "hump" nothing. Most of time it has happened he was standing. One time he was lying down and he just started thrusting. It's weird! I thought at first it might be something with his anal glands but after reading up, that doesn't seem the case. In fact, it seems he "expressed" on his own last week-- on my bed ( ), which I didn't recognize at the time but now realize that's what it was. Gross!

He's not scooting and otherwise acting completely normal-- eating and pooping fine, which makes me wonder if it's behavioral. Anybody ever seen/had this happen? Should I be worried?

I dont know about boy dogs, but panda has never been really hygenic, except on a few occations where her leg starts thumpin' the ground cause she found the "clean" spot.....lol....
Is he neutered?
It's probably just hormones.... exactly what it appears to be...
Yup, he was neutered months ago. It's been a long time since I had a boy dog-- is that normal after they've been neutered?
I don't know, if he was humping objects or people I would say dominance issues... but humping the air? Did he have both testicles descended? If one or both were not descended they may have missed some testicular tissue.
Also perhaps he has an infection in there? I would check for any discharge, or dirt or hair stuck where it shouldn't be....
Barney does that sometimes. My husband has said that he is just stretching his back muscles (I don't believe it!). He's never 'relieved' himself as far as I can tell. At first I thought he was having some sort of seizure (I'v enever had a boy dog before)...
Sorry, Jill, no advice, just know you're not alone!
I thought he was having a seizure too!

I checked the whole butt and groin areas (with gloves on!) and everything appears as normal. He seems fine and it doesn't even happen that often but it's so odd that it bothers me! I think if it continues I'll swing him by the vet in a few weeks just to be safe.
My Flannigan does the same thing and he has done it to Fergie. He has been fixed for 9 years. He started doing it when he was a year old. I just tell him to stop and he walks a way. :?: Oh! when he humps Fergie its her head. He doesn't know which end he needs. I think its just being a boy. LOL

Fergies Mom
The Gooch does this sometimes too! He's neutered as well...he even looks confused when he's doing it!

I think it is just a boy thing!

Colleen and The Gooch=>Really Mommy, do you have to tell them EVERYTHING!
I'd have to agree, it's a boy thing.

A little creature that lived in my household found the "air" to be boring. His playmate was a female. They had a bell that hung in their cage. I'd had these two for probably a couple years and once in awhile you'd see or hear the bell ring. No big deal.

One day, that bell started dinging and didn't stop! I finally went to see what was going on, and was amazed to find that my loving little male parakeet was humping that bell.

It would ring wild!!! People thought I was crazy, but he too, left the evidence on the bell. I finally had to take it away from him. I was afraid he was going to "hump" himself to death. I waited several weeks, then a few months and put it back in the cage, same thing every time. He'd run to it. So, the little guy lost his bell forever.
I have a 2 year old shepherd mix and he does this exact same thing. He'll just start humping the air and it'll go on for about 10 seconds. He has an erection for a while and walks around awkwardly but then is fine. He's neutered as well. We've always wondered why, also. I just assume it's hormonal and, frankly, he probably enjoys it.
Lol. With Clyde, it never stopped either. He still air humps a few times a week. Now we laugh and cheer him on. It seems to make him happy. ;)
Emmett still does this too.

He's 9 1/2 now and I've had him since he was 1 1/2. I had to have him fixed the first week I had him - he was just lovin' me too much. He stayed away from Bailey, it was me he had his eyes (or whatever) set on. I was completely exhausted by the end of the first week and begged the vet to get him in. I couldn't sit, sleep...bend over! I was walking, non-stop, around my house becuase he just wouldn't let me be.

He still does it to me, occassionly. He gets so excited getting into the car that sometimes he does it to the air when he hops in the rear door. The vet said that this is "relatively" normal behavior for a dog, but to let her know if it became obsessive.

It comes in waves...and he always has the most guilty look in his eyes after I tell him to stop. He does that Princess Di look (head down, eyes up and shy).

Ty will do that after he and Tasker have had a paticularly "rousing" game of wrestle and growl. I'll break them up and Ty will stand there humping the air. I figured he was showing off what a "MAN" he is
Rosco is 8.5 and still does it, with him I just figure he's nuts
My puppy does it too...every now and again...the breeder says he doesn't even realize what he's doing and to not make a big deal of it and not to scold him in any way...how old is your baby?

I don't think you ahve any medical issues to be concerned about. I say, well, "boys will be boys" 8O

By the way, neutered or not, my first OES was neutered and he did it too...
I was the one who originally posted and Clyde's 2 now but he was probably only a few months old when he first started.
Truman is neutered and still does this and he just turned 4. I don't think it's anything to worry about. It does look funny, though!
Yep. Barney still does it too. He took a break from it for a while, but now he seems to be doing it more frequently...spring is in the air? (hardly!). It just cracks me up because he looks so ashamed and will often face the corner doing it...
I'm really laughting, because...well...welcome to my world! 3 year Pirate (who has been neuter for a very long time) has a dollie...Robert. Robert is a fleece, gingerbread type toy.

Pirate :hearts: Robert!!! He carries him around in his mouth, and humps the air! I think it just means he's really happy!

Goofy dogs!
I had just about had enough of this behavior in my own dog, so out of curiosity I typed 'dog humping air, is this normal?' into google and this forum post was the first thing that came up! why is this so funny to me? because the dog thats doing it is an oes! He's done this off and on his whole life (he's 5 1/3 yrs now), and has been neutered since he was 8 months. but recently, like the past 3 months we catch him at it nearly every day, he doesn't look guilty, or like anything has caught his eye or anything, he'll just be walkin around and suddenly stop and start humping, and its more than 10 seconds on our part, usually he'll just keep going until we say something, although we don't usually just let it go so I don't know how long it would be if we just let him keep at it... Kinda relieving that this isn't an issue, but still a little weird...
Ty's nick name is Sir Humpsalot
Maybe he thinks about it a lot?

Just two weeks ago, out of nowhere, my Ben starting humping either thin air, or an imaginary girlfriend. It was about the dumbest thing I ever saw in my life. I asked him, "what the hell are you doing" and, I swear, he looked embarrassed. I caught him doing it a few times that week, I noticed when I first came in from work, but then he stopped just as suddenly as he started.

Ben is four, and was neutered at 7 months, so I know it's not testosterone hanging on. Who knows what a dog is thinking?
Hey! I totally forgot about this topic! Since Lizzie came to live with us, Pirate doesn't air hump anymore!!! Maybe he needs to be the big, strong, macho brother now.
My dog Max,who's now 6,does the same thing! I was rubbing his ear the other day (he seems to enjoy that),and out of no where he just started humping the air! I felt kinda gross, cause I thought I turned him on.. It was weird. He sometimes just does it for no reason, also. My mom thinks he's just "stretching his back muscles." LOL,no. This dog is AWE ME SO HORNY.
I run a doggy daycare and boarding facility and let me tell you that females air hump as well. It is not just a guy dog thing. It appears to be a dominant but not an aggressive behavior leading to confrontation. I observe it to manifest after a dog male or female sniffs another less dominant dog. Fixed or not. I do see where it can be a celebration gesture like a high five. It is hilarious but embarrassing as well when there are new customers checking the place out and have not observed the behavior them selves prior.
Dont be too quick to call it Boys will be boys people!
Those of you who are concerned that the dog might be suffering a seizure, assess your dog, and it's behaviours around the house.

Our dog suffered these erections episodes once or twice a week, we later found that this was as a direct result of hyperthyroidism. However it was not these erections that lead us to do the correct testing. There were other symptoms.

Our dog has had a simple course of hormone therapy, and is now completely cured.

I would at least recommend reading this article to see if this might be you're chap's problem :)
Have patience, it becomes relevant to your puppy (perhaps) about 3 quarters of the way in, under the 3rd category of dog.
