shelters and orginizations for Hurricane releif

Hi Guys,

I thought maybe we could have a sticky with lists of which shelters and organizations need help, in what forms and where to send it. I thought this would be an easy way to keep track of what to send where, instead of trying to page through all the posts with various info!

Hi-
PetSafe Rescue, in the Traverse City, Michigan area, is arranging to pick up 80 animals... injured pets and owner surrenders from hurricane Katrina. They need volunteers, crates, dog/cat food, cat litter, shampoo, old towels, blankets, collars, leashes... basically everything a dog/cat needs. They are also working on locating a building to use during this take-in/cleaning/vet evaluation process and also a climate controled vehicle for transport. If you would like to volunteer, you can go to the TC PetSmart and complete a volunteer form... there is a table set up with info and forms by the adoptable cat area. Banfield Vet may also be able to provide additional information and is taking in donated items. Note that the PetSafe website is currently down but you should be able to make contact with the information shown below-

Below is a letter I received from Doris of PetSafe on Monday. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. The faster we can get pets out of the overflowing Louisiana shelters and into other shelters around the country, the faster they can assist more pets. Thanks for reading and for caring!

...Through our affiliation with the ASPCA and the United States Humane
Society we have been asked to assist in the rescue of surrendered pets
from the Hurricane Katrina Disaster. On September 10th we will be
meeting a transport vehicle in Fort Wayne Indiana with our trucks and
bringing pets to our area for placement into final homes.

We need the help of our membership, their friends, family and community.

1st we are going to need medium size and larger poly carriers and wire
crates, these will need to be donated and will not be returned since we
may not return with the same equipment we drive down with. Clumping cat litter and Neutro Dog and Cat Food.

2nd we need funding, for the care of the pets, medical expenses and to
help cover the cost of transportation.

3rd we need foster homes and homes that are willing to adopt a pet
sight unseen. If you are willing to adopt a pet sight unseen that will
increase the number of animals we are able to take. You can say a small
breed dog or cat or ferret, whatever and we will try to find you a good
pet for you.

4th If you have a building we can use for short term maintenance of
these pets prior to being moved into foster care and final homes it
would help dramatically.

We are also going to be working with EARPs an Exotic Animal Rescue Group and will be assisting in transport and care of exotics like birds,
bunnies etc. If you are interested in something like this send us a note.

All of the Animals we are taking have been surrendered by their owners
after they were at times carried out of the disaster zone by their
owners. Many will be exceptional pets.

Please email us if you can help or forward this email to anyone who
loves animals.
Louisiana State University Veterinary School is in need of
supplies and donations to help their students/faculty and
displaced veterinarians care for the animals affected by
Katrina.

Thanks to Zahra for this info. While they're not a shelter- they need help too!
If you want to do something to help with the hurricane releif efforts, but can't make it down south, consider this option, this was e-mail to me by a MN rescue group. I beleive the letter was originally poasted on the MN BARF List:

MESSAGE FROM ROSEANNE CARBONE:

Folks-

I just got off the phone with my sister who lives up in Pequot Lakes.

She's very close to Camp Ripley where they are expecting 3,000 evacuees sometime tomorrow or Wednesday. We've all heard about this on the news.

The part we haven't heard (yet) is that along with these 3,000 evacuees, will be between 500 and 1,000 companion animals!

These animals belong with the folks who will be housed in Camp Ripley, but they can't live with them there. The animals have to be housed separately and cared for by volunteers until their families are able to do that.

Her fiancee runs the shelter up there, HART, and is totally
overwhelmed with this task. They have received very generous offers from both Home Depot and Fleet Farm, Home Depot is donating all the crates they need and Fleet Farm will provide food and other essentials.

What they're in a panic for is volunteers. They'll need people who can assist in building the temporary shelter (today thru the end of the week) and they'll need people who can help to care for the animals.

HART is a very small, local shelter that houses on average 35 dogs. They'll have to build temporary shelters (probably big tents) for the animals, something to keep them out of the sun and the rain.

If you've been wondering about what you can do to help the victims of this tragedy and have been hesitant to send your money and supplies down south, wonder no more. Your help is needed right here in Minnesota.

I'm going to try to contact local news to see if we can't get some local coverage here. I don't think anyone realizes that Minnesota will be getting 1,000 animals along with the people! While that's a good thing, there's lots of work to be done in a very short amount of time.

If you want to find out what more you can do to help, please call HART, at 1-218-829-4141 and be patient. They're so overwhelmed right now,I don't think they're even sure of what all they need.

Thanks for your consideration.

The pets are here!! Ninety-one of them. They have been checked over by the vet, washed, nails clipped and are now getting use to the Traverse City area. They should be ready for adoption next week. They're even talking about going down to Baton Rouge for more!!

The outpouring of support for these abandoned animals is abundant! Traverse City is not only hospitable to their two legged guests but to the four legged ones as well!
