Deodorizing Sand!

OK...I had no idea where to post this, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a safe, environmentally sound way to deodorize sand in my back yard? I smells like a giant litter box underneath our porch which is on the second level of the house. My guess is because it is sheltered, it doesn't get rain, therefore it doesn't get washed! Of course, because it's sheltered, this is where The Gooch likes to go! :x Prissy boy!

I was burning scented candles on the porch like crazy, when friends came over for coffee! Thank God they are animal lovers and understand these things! But, having said that, it was not the best cup of coffee with friends I've had! I like to enjoy the smell of THE COFFEE not THAT SMELL!

I hope someone has a solution! 8O

when the dog run gets a bit smelly (once a week with 2 dogs!) we spray diluted bleach (we got one of those sprayers from the local hardware store...I think they are used for spraying trees) I spray the dog run (really soak it) and then let it sit for an hour or 2 and then hose it all off. Of course the dog run is off limits to the dogs during that time.
We started this when we had a pup that had coccidia....the vet originally told us this was overkill but then we found out that bleach was the only thing that prevented Merlin from getting sick from the sick pup.
I would definitely hose it down... maybe you could put some low decorative fencing around the edge of it to keep him out of it?
I have a kennel area that connects to my deck, and thats where my boys do their bizness, and man it CAN stink.I clean our kennel out 3times a week, picking up what i can see, then I use a high powered water hose to get rid of urine and the yukkies I cant see.Ive even used a pressure washer, which works great also.Maybe raking the sand would help also.Hope I helped.Good luck,we animal lovers are just so sensitive too our fur babies when they make OR are stinky!!LOL!!
Nature's Miracle should work, plus is shouldn't be has harmful to nearby plants. I know the bleach does work, but if it moves to nearby plants, Uh Oh. Borax would work but same problem as bleach........boron poisoning.
We had gravel in our outside runs at the kennel. Besides pooper scooping every other day, we would spread lime out about once a month...just kept the doggies out of it for a couple of hours. It didn't really smell bad at all.
Thanks for all the advice, I did get a huge box of baking soda yesterday and raked it into the sand...it seems to help! :D But I am going to sanatize it though as I'm thinking the soda is just masking the bacteria! YUCK!

Does this area drain? Could you be getting a little pond underneath the gravel?
I do the same thing as Gail. I clean their area every day but occassionally I'll put down a layer of lime to keep odors down. It really helps.

Good luck! :D
