Well the honey moon period is over with Merlin...at 3 months he's counter surfing...terrorizing my cats - even the evil one..whom dogs in the past have been terrified of. Bugging my two older dogs whom have little patience for his antics. A relief has been an off leash dog park which we visit daily and puppy obedience once a week. Here's my question...he's only 3 months and is already lifting his leg to urinate and just yesterday tried to hump another dog at the offleash dog park. Now I know these are signs of dominance and sexual maturity...but he's only 3 months old!!!! Anyone else have this problem or have heard of a pup so young displaying this behavior already? Thanks in Advance Marianne |

Hi Marianne,
Wow, it sounds as if you have your hands full with Merlin. I have never had that experience yet with Jack who is a beautiful 80lbs at 7 1/2 months old. He still squats to urinate. Annabelle hasn't went into her first heat yet. She is almost 6 months old now and Jack has never tried to mount her. Actually, I was thinking Jack might be taking longer showing sexual maturity. I am anxious to hear some other responses to this. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Stormi |
Buckley didn't start lifting his leg up until he was about 15 mths old. We had him nutered at 11 mths when we adopted him so we thought that may have had something to do with it. Even now at 2 years old he squats the majority of the time

Our new oes Feziwig still hasn't lifted his leg to pee (he's 4mnths) but from the 1st few days we had him (3months) he was humping and i don't mean once in awhile! I thought it was odd too, how could he possibly be that mature at 3mnths and be such a monster in so many other aspects! Thankfully the humping has pretty much stopped lately, but he's moved on to bigger and better BAD habits! |

Our dog Barney also does not lift his leg and he is 7 months old and we were wondering if he ever will!! |
I have an intact 17 month old male that still hasn't figured out how to lift his leg. I am not compaining though. I did think it was rather odd. He might learn one of these days. Stormi and co. |
Fox is 7 and lifts his leg once in awhile, otherwise it's the boy stretch. I had one boy who lever lifted his leg. He lived with girls, he never had an older brother show him how
As for humping, yes, neutering will help lessen this, but it never goes away. As the pack dynamics shifts, humping is their way of reestablishing dominance. Merlin is going to get his head knocked off one of these day as he learns his place. The hardest thing for us is to know if, when and how to break it up. Hang in there, this last only for a few more years. |
