we'd wait with him outside to go pee, but he wouldnt.. so when we come back inside - he pees as soon as we look away. we just got our carpet cleaned - is this the reason? has anyone experienced this with their sheepie |

How old is London? |
You may need to start back at square one, and treat him like a new puppy. To a dog going potty inside or outside is no big deal. They really could care less, and just go wherever and whenever they get the urge. It is us humans that do not appreciate the lack of selectiveness of the canines.
I would make it worth his while to do his duty outside. Take him out each time he is to go, give him a cue, "Go pee" or whatever, and when he goes you give him a tiny, tasty treat. Then back inside for some free time. He does not know what "go pee" means, but eventually he will clue in. And the treat will encourage him to go outside, as obviously, he gets no treat when he does anything inside. For a younger dog, just learning the ropes, anytime he has "an accident" in an incorrect location, it includes that location as a "potty place" so management is key untill this is under control. Do not yell, or punish him for going in the wrong place, as that will only confuse him and then he will not go in front of you and you will find it in places like behind the couch, in the other room, etc. Plus he will will be afraid to do it outside in front of you, so you will not be able to reward him. I suspect that is what may have happened, if he will not go until you look away. Crate him or keep him with you so you can watch him, and take him outside often enough so that he goes outside, but not too much so that the trips outside are not fruitful. My 5 month-old, Bosley-with-a-tail goes on cue every time we bring him outside, even just a few drops, so he can get a treat and we get assured that he is emptied for a while. We had a really hard time house-training him, but now, finallly, he has us trained to give him treats whenver he wants one, by going to the door to ask us to let him out so he can pee and get a treat LOL. Works for me! Another possiblity, is marking. How old is he? Is he neutered yet? If he is starting to mark then that is a whole other issue, that is NOT house-training related. |
Has Bosley pulled the "fake-out pee" yet? That's when I knew who was training who - when Bailey would squat for a second to psych me out then come running over for his treat. LOL! |
LOL...Bosley invented the fake-out pee..LOL....But it is a great game to play, and we both win. He gets a treat and I get fewer urine drops on my carpet...I am starting to ignore his requests to go out, and am starting to wean him off the treats. Right now we are on a variable schedule, so he never knows if he is getting one or not. I didn't start this until he had a really good handle on what the whole thing was all about, though. But anytime I ask specifically ask him to go and he complies, he gets a treat. That way I can always empty him out before bedtime, cratetime and car-rides etc.
He is so funny when I ignore his requests. He doesn't get upset or anything, but justs flops to the floor, with the huge sheepie-sigh...and the head mop right on the floor between the front paws.....Too funny : ) |

He knows Mom has figured him out now! |
