New to forum We rescued OES

We rescued an OES in November; she is 1-1/2 years old, 60 lbs. On day three she got pneumonia. After a 24 hour time of fear (and a big vet bill, since we live in Los Angeles) Maggie bounced back and is now back to normal. Vet thought it could be stress from the shelter. This is our 2nd OES, first one we got as a puppy. Since our first OES was over 20 years ago I’ve forgotten what characters they are. She came to us housebroken and really has no behavior problems other than the playful biting at your hand when you stop petting her and growling when she is eating and you get too close. The two strange things she does are prune our geraniums and trying to dig at the carpet as she would a hole in dirt. Sometimes she will lie where she scratches but often not. Any insight on this? I love this forum you all seem so nice and helpful and a good resource for me :o When I figure out how to post a picture I will put up a picture of Mags.

Welcome to the forum!
Our male sheepie also scratches the floor like digging and then will lay there. I just thought it had something to do with getting his scent there or at the very least getting rid of Gracie's. He doesn't do it all of the time, but I did find it unsual- Anyone else know why they do this?

PS- Looking forward to picts :D
I've heard that they scratch like that before laying down because in the wild they would have to dig themselves a little den or ditch to sleep in. So maybe it's instinct to make a place to rest?
You got it ... your OES is making a little bed for him/her self. Ours does it all the time in the laundry that we at first left by accident at the foot of the bed ... now we leave it there on purpose for Pippy to make her bed in.

She used to drive me nuts -- I'd lay there and laugh at her -- she'd scratch and circle around and scratch some more; but once she got the bed just right, she'd *PLOP* right down there and go right to sleep :)

You know, I wouldn't trade my sheepie for anything ... God knew what He was doing when the breed came to be. I've never seen any other dog do this. How precious can one little dog be?

Peace,

Aren't sheepies too much? We have only had her a month and she has already figured out how it works in our house. She knows when I turn off the lights it's time for bed and she just trots off to her bed and pretty much stays there all night. She did however get into a Christmas gift of a candy heart, unwrapped it and ate 6 of the 8 pieces of foil covered heart chocolate. I know it's poison to dogs but she seems to be okay and I have put all candy out of her reach. Our previous OES opened a whole pound of chocolate under the tree and had the whole box. She lived to be 15 years old.
MM,

I grew up just south of LA (Palos Verdes). I know you don't get to see your sheepie run around in the snow like she's racing for pole position at the Indy 500!! The ice on the driveway doesn't slow her down a single bit, either! She just loves to play, be it summer or winter. During the summer, I walk her down to our local lake, and she zooms up and down the beach, splashing as hard as she can -- I think that's how she makes up for not swimming. I'm not kidding: I've tried to get this dog into the water ... she just won't do it. It's been less than 2 years now, but I'm sold on OES, and I'm starting to get really familiar with the sweet smell of a soaking wet sheepie. I used to be a giant fan of Cocker Spaniels, but now I'll never understand why again.

I don't mean to offend anyone here, but I think that God was having a really good day when sheepies were created :D

Pippy has already had her brush with death: when we got her from the farm, she was 8 weeks old and diagnosed with a heart condition called a PDA. We had her operated on this year ... she's fully recovered, and if God wills it, she'll live to be an old dog. I let her have an Oreo every now and then ... she gets through it just fine.

And God bless you for saving one of His creatures. The payback is enormous -- maybe you should pack her into the car and take her up to Big Bear once it snows.

Peace,
