Separation issues...

I know a lot of other sheepdogs stay at their owner's feet. Jasper is no exception. It's ALWAYS me. He's always laying down on the floor beside where I'm sitting. He's always lying on my side of the bed. The only time he's not by me is when we're all outside. That doesn't bother me much.

But...if I leave the room, even for a quick trip to turn down the A/C or something, he immediately jumps up, starts running, and just about knocks me over trying to get beside me (he HAS knocked me over a couple of times). Again, it's only me he does this too.

Anyone else's sheepie do this? Just wondering if this is a sheepie trait too or if he's having issues with separation (I seem to do it with kids, my sons and then my nephews the 2 weeks I kept them so I figured maybe I have the affect on dogs too? lol).

Yup, Merlin is always by my side too. Goes to bed when I do, sleeps on the floor on my side of the bed, doesnt get up until I do (even tho hubby is up before me) Sometimes but rarely he will sleep in my eldest daughter's room (who happens to be a mini me  ),until I go to bed, but I think this is mostly because he has had enough of Avalon and doesnt want to be bothered by her more when we are watching tv. Doesnt matter if he is in the deepest sleep...if I move, so does he. However he has never tried to knock me down, Merlin is very subdued as far as sheepies go but he is definately a velcro dog. 8)
Sounds so familiar. Maggie's eyes are always looking at me, and at this point I think I would miss it if she grew out of it. I actually tip toe around the house when she's sleeping because she will follow me into every room. Friends say they have never seen a puppy so in love with their mom before!
Unless he's too tired, Pooh is always at my heels. It's where the term "velcro dog" comes from.
Me too. James just told me the other day that when I leave the house, Clyde goes nuts and barks and scratches at the door to follow me. He never does that when James leaves so I didn't expect to hear that. The wall by our door is looking rough!
Though Gucci likes to be by my side when I'm in the house, he doesn't seem to mind when I leave the house without him. I just got back from a week in Winnipeg without him and I picked him up at Doggie Camp and he didn't even get excited that I was there! As we were heading to the car, Judy (one of the owners of Dog Camp) drove up from getting groceries and he went nuts! 8O They seemed a little embarassed for me! Well, at least I know for sure that Gooch loves it there....I guess!

Maybe Murphy (our rescue guy) will be more like that! :? I have my reservations though...Dog Camp is pretty cool and so are Jim and Judy!

Colleen (*sigh*) and The Gooch=>I don't know why mommy gets upset by my independance!
Barney is right by our side always. And it can be either of us, doesn't really matter. Sometimes it gets annoying when Barney is FINALLY sleeping or just chewing on his bone and then I get up to do something really fast (like turn down the AC or blow my nose) and then I'll come right back, but Barney will be there before I know it! And then the whole settling down process begins again!
Colleen, don't feel bad! Bailey is pretty independent too. And it's a good thing because now both his dad and I travel for work so we would have a really hard time if we had separation anxiery issues. We've consistently worked with him to make sure he understands that we're in charge of the pack and he gets to live a life of leisure.

Gail, have you read The Dog Listener: Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation, by Jan Fennell? It sounds like Jasper is worried whenever you get up to do something. You might want to read it and see if it rings any bells with you.

Remy would LOVE to be beside me at all times, and when she is in the house...I move, she moves. Drives hubby nuts, after all I'm just going to the bathroom.

She doesn't have separation anxiety, so I just accept her velcro behaviour, and when I really need space from her I either bring out the hair supplies or let her outside for awhile...
Sounds like that's a sheepie thing too. :) I just wasn't sure. I don't think he means to plow me down, but he's 75 lbs and I'm only 120. It doesn't take much for him to do it as big as he is. lol It doesn't bother me too much, as long as he doesn't start doing this to the boys too.

Gooch starts jumping around like a maniac when I bring out the grooming stuff! 8O

Colleen and The Gooch=>Gotta stay lookin' good for the ladies!
