For the last week she seems to have a problem when she gets up or if she wakes suddenly. She will start to gag as though she has something in her throat that she is trying to hack up. This goes on for anywhere from 15 seconds or so to about 45 seconds. She never brings anything up. Otherwise she is eating and drinking and does not appear to have a problem swallowing. I have a call into my vet and am awaiting a call back. Any Ideas? Thank you |

Norman was doing this a bit ago and our vet said it could be a couple of things. One is a stricture. A narrowing of the throat that causes tiny bits of mucus to irritate the rest of the throat. Makes it feel like there's more there than there really is. This can also cause problems with swallowing.
The other is possible tonsillitus. Yup, dogs get it too. Usually a round of antibiotics can be used to help clear it up. It could also be allergies or sinuses. Just like people also, the drainage will settle while she's laying down and cause her to cough and gag when she gets up. The last thing is that there could actually be something down there that's causing an irritation. Try leaving your dog's collar off when she is inside to lessen any irritations. If you go in for a visit, your vet should be able to see any medium to large strictures or objects just by looking down your dog's throat. They'll also check for redness and irritation and if her lymph nodes are enlarged indicating an infection. |
It coul also be a simple case of worms... good luck with the vet:) please let us know how she is |
