I've been e-baying...........specifically for the "all weather leather" style purse which is now "out of print" so to speak. Jusdging by what is available on e-bay I suspect there are alot of knock offs out there. Does anyone know how to tell for sure if it is "the real McCoy"??? I was recently told that not all Dooney Bourke purses have tags and serial numbers inside, is this true? I also have notices that some purses have a type of hardware that I am not accustomed to seeing on Dooney Bourke purses, is that a "sign"??? Any of you shoe freaks out there purse freaks too? Darcy I was thinking may you..................... Also, anyone know of a good source for "vintage" purses? |
|
Re hardware -- sounds like a sign. My favorite site of all time for online shopping is www.zappos.com. They specialize in shoes and purses, but sadly they don't carry your brand. If you are venturing out to try something new, give them a spin. They have AMAZING customer service. Always choose the free shipping because they upgrade you to 2 day for free. And returns are free too (including postage). I love zappos. |
valarie, I bought my shoes for my son's wedding from them; "naughty monkey" hehehehe! got a deal!!! |
Cool! Aren't they great? I love all the reviews and the multi-view. |
Yup, but still a bit pricier then "payless" |
I didn't realize payless had a website. I'll have to check it out next time I am looking. . . |
Ginny, I dont own a Dooney. But I do own a Coach, Cole Haan and a Gucci.... None of these purses have a serial # in the actual purse, maybe on the paperwork....I do know that if the purse is real, the retailer will fix it up,if it breaks tears etc....My Cole Haan is 10 yrs old, the zipper went bad...I took it to the Cole Haan store...they shipped it out (free) and had the whole silk interior lining zipper and all replaced for free.....I know its the same with the other 2....these three purses have lasted me the last 12 years.....My sis likes Liz, but she needs a new purse every season...I like shoes better than purses...so I spend a lot up front and keep them for years and years..back to the subject...the interior (if it has lining) should be as well stitched as the outside...the label should also be stitched on not glued....the inside zippered pocket should also have a tag on it just like the outside and most important it should smell like really expensive leather........
If your unsure about really from fake ..go to the nearest department store and do some snooping....look and touch one...get the idea and then check out ebay.....personally, depending on how cheap they are on ebay, I dont know whether I would buy a used one.....They would have to be really cheap....you can buy a new one for a little more and wear it out yourself....it will take you years to do it!!! |
Yes, you called it. The shoe freaks are purse freaks too. Though I have close to 500 pairs of shoes (I gave some to charity!), I only own a little over 100 purses. In all fairness, my mom works for Lord and Taylor and I get a heck of a discount so many bags that would cost $300 and up, I can get ridiculously cheap. Even cheaper if my mom forgets to ask me to pay her back!
I have everything from Hype, Francesco Biasia, Franco Sarto, Maxx and Michael Korrs to standards like Coach and Kenneth Cole, cheaper stuff like Guess and Nine West and everything in between. My motto is if I like it, I buy it. I change bags at least once every couple of days if not more. Anyway, I also do not own Dooney and Bourke but I'd agree with Darcy and go to the stores that sell them and check out the new styles to see the differences between them. Until the last few years, Coach only did leather and now they do fabric so they whole idea of checking authenticity changed. Watch for things like the feet-- some originals of some designers, like Kate Spade, should always have them and, in most cases, the tags should be stitched, not glued. Many times it's the style of the stitching on the bag itself. Louis Vuitton has a specific stitch style that most fakes can't replicate. I actually bought one at a swap meet in Las Vegas from a dealer that sells "the good stuff" in a truck outside the meet. We took it to the Vuitton store and they couldn't tell the difference. Myself, I hate Louis Vuitton, especially those new white ones-- I just bought it for a friend. As far as eBay, I've bought a few bags-- actually I just bought a Melie Bianco bag authentic the other day for $60-- not an incredible discount but it's cheaper than at a store and authentic. Search for dealers that say "authentic" in the title and the feedback reflects that they are not liars. A lot of overseas dealers say they have authentic stuff but if you check their feedback, you'll see that they're lying. Many years ago I bought a Prada bag that was called authentic and when I got it, the lining actually said "Parda." I learned my lesson after that. Unfortunately, the most popular, familar brands are the ones most faked too. Now the only bags I buy from eBay are ones I can't get from mom or funky styles that I can't find anywhere else. Finally, a subject that I can speak on with complete authority. Kind of sad that I have a master's degree but accessories are my specialty! |
My best friend bought me a fake Kate Spade in NY...it was this cute little red thing...any way I am using it....and a client says to me...Uhhhh, you have Kate Spade attached to your boob.. Well, the glue on the emblem reattached itself to my chest as I was lugging my purse and door samples around.....I didnt notice, but my client did..lol.... |
I love shoes way more than I love purses. I don't have that many because the good ones are so expensive and I usually carry the same purse for a long time (can't be bothered switching around). I have an orange leather Maxx purse than I just adore - it clashed with half my wardrobe but I loved it so much I didn't care. I had to put it aside because my husband bought me a fabulous black Etienne Aigner purse for Christmas. Can you believe it? I have a husband who SHOPS for PURSES! And he has great taste too. But when the fall rolls around I'm going back to the orange purse... |
Men shopping for purses must only be around Christmas My husband bought me a Coach purse that's big enough to put a weekend's worth of clothes in. I had sore shoulders from carrying it, now I leave it in the car and use a normal size |
My purse has been a diaper bag for the last 4 years...lol There's a cute Coach one at the BX that I'm wanting...just trying to justify spending the money for it. |
One of the very few things I do spend money on is purses, I don't have alot but when I do buy a purse it's usually not cheap. I have a coach purse that I bought 22 years ago before my daughter was born, I've used it for everything from a diaper bag to a gymnastics bag to a briefcase and for my sons wedding I carried all the "necessities" to the church in it. It cost me a fortune (at the time) but I can't think ( dollar for dollar) of money I ever spent so well. The leather is like iron.
You all may have convinced me to see if I can't find a NEW all weather leather purse somewhere and go ahead and spring for it!!! Hmmmmmmmm my birthday is coming up in November........ |
I hate having to carry a purse. For many years I didn't, just a large wallet. Now though, with so much crap that needs to be lugged back and forth to work I do have one, but it's very basic. Functional...lol... Blue, not leather, like a backpack material, lots of pockets. I think it was ten bucks on sale. Good enough...lol... |
LOL, I guess I am the minority on this one. I have owned maybe 5 purses in my entire life, 3 of them were from my teenage years, that my daughter now has, and the other 2...well I have one left in my closet somewhere.
If I am going out, I have a huge selection to choose from. It includes, a Barbie, Carebears, Bob the Builder, Hotwheels, and my favorite, the Wiggles backpack to carry everything in. It works great, and I am the most styling Mommy at the mall.....LOL Ashlan is going to be different than me, I think, she is very "girly", she loves purses and nail polish. If it was up to her, she would wear make up already.....LOL I told her, that I will help her with her make up when she turns 32. She happily agreed. Stormi and co. |
heheheheheheh!!! |
I have one Kate Spade purse that my husband got me off ebay, that I am pretty sure is the real thing--stitched on label, etc...
My roommate from college is from Hong Kong and she used to go back every summer and take requests from friends to bring back all the Kate Spad bags and Pruda bags, and Coochs...so funny--but they were all like $10 US, so it was worth it! Overstock.com has a lot of stuff that you can look around for (discount)... Bluefly.com also has a lot of stuff to look at (discount) Or, do you have a Nordstrom Rack store near you? Especially if you aren't looking to be the trendiest person on the block, it's a good choice...or Off 5t (saks fifth ave.'s discount store)... AHHH, I love shoes and bags....And clothes... |
I forgot all about Bluefly-- that's a great place too and everything's authentic for sure. |

Stormi and co. LOL That's so cute... I just started letting my daughter wear makeup this year, when she turned 14. She is very good about it and only wears a little, and nice nuetral colors. She's only allowed light lipgloss so far though, no bright lipsticks etc. I never wear makeup, just not my thing. |
Tasker's Mom wrote: I need help from all you shoe and purse hound out there!! I'm a Payless girl myself. But I have one OBSESSION......... Douney Bourke purses. Of course I have only ever owned one in my entire life but I love them, covet them and want more. My son gave ME one as a "wedding gift" (I didn't know the bride and groom gave the parents a gift ) which "kindled the flame of my desire" once again.

Darcy I was thinking may you..................... Also, anyone know of a good source for "vintage" purses? Response: I own a Dooney & Bourke All weather hand bag ( have had it about 5 years now) that I bought from and actual Dooney & Bourke retail shop in Maryland and there is no serial numbers to be found on it. So to answer your question... no it does not need a serial number to be real... ...I am an avid purse and shoe collector from A to Z and I have also noticed that there are several new styles and new hardware coming out on the Dooney & Bourke handbags...only thing I could suggest is to go to Dooney & Bourke's original website and look for the bag you are thinking about buying and see if any detail is different no matter how minute.... if there is even a slight difference more than likely it is a knock off... Good luck and Keep on Shopping.... PS If you are still looking for the all weather handbags you should email me and we could talk further and maybe I could help you find what you are looking for. |

I had some stuff donated for a yard sale for rescue. NICE stuff.....silly me sold a big Dooney and Burke bag for 4 bucks BUT, I was firm I wouldn't take 3 I had no idea....she probably put it on ebay! |
I know this is an old thread, but HOLY COW! ButtersStotch do you really have that many shoes and bags? And here I thought my sister was bad. You must have a really big closet! |
I own a Marc Jacobs "Stella" and "lovely". I loveee it! You can try looking on bluefly.com for a discounted Dooney
When I was a little girl my mother told me a secret.. A true Louis Vuitton purse's seam matches. A fake one is "cut off". Im sure that's the same for Dooney. |
nevermind about bluefly It's already mentioned above! and didnt notice the date. |
I'm thinking ButterStotch probably has well over 1000 by now
I have 3 purses (or handbags as we call them here) one I use everyday, one Radley which is too small, if I can't fit a bottle of water in, no point! One work bag which is funny as I don't work, and one shopper. My fave is my super funky Eastpack rucksack which is great for overnight or if I'm out all day I can get Ru's stuff in it too. Not glamorous at all I have 3 pairs of shoes, 2 of them were very cheap off ebay. 1 pair of DMs, 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of wellies and 2 pairs of sneakers |
