When I quit back in the late 80's, about 2 weeks after I stopped, I was cleaning the house and suddenly my chest began to pound and I broke out into a cold sweat. Joan rushed me to Mass Gerneral Hospital (rather than call an abulance and be taken to the local mortu - er hospital). The doctor told me that I had developed something called Small Airways Disease (If I recall correctly). Apparently when a person smokes, not only are the cillia that move phlegm up and out of the lungs immobillized, but also the production of phlegm is greatly reduced. When someone quits, Frequently the phlegm production comes back before the cillia, causing them to cough. (BTW, some other web sites contradict my doctor -- they say that the coughing is simply due to the cilia's regrowth. Either way, the effect is the same.) This explains the fact that previously whenever I had try to quit, I actually developed a cough! Don't worry, it'll go away in a couple of weeks. If you do get a cough and it doesn't go away in a couple of weeks, go see the doc.. |

I have coughed a bit today....kinda wheezy....I thought it was from growing back the cilia too.....Ive quit before, so I know what to expect, I just dont want to expect it!!!! |
This happened to my grandmother when she quit. Try having Brian do some coupage (sp) on you. With a cupped hand he can pat with a decent amount of force across your back. If you divide your upper back into four squares, upper left and right, lower left and right, you should do an equal number in each square. It will help to dislodge the mucus a little easier.
Maybe Ginny can give you better instructions for this. |
