I am trying to get to the bottom of Kia's licking. She goes on and one with one foot pad and her behind. I asked the vet about this in June and she didn't see anything, and gave me some wipes for any possible bacteria in the pad (from moisture). They don't seem to help much. She has been on the same food forever and I'm guessing if it were allergies she would bother other areas of her body. Any ideas? I guess it could be boredom but she does it even when we are all home... Thanks! |

Barney likes to lick his paws (2 in particular) and as far as I can tell there is nothing to make him lick them. He also likes to lick one specific spot on his left side. We just try and be good about seeing him do it and tell him NO, which works for a while (okay, a minute).
My parent's sheepdog likes to lick her paws too, to the point of being raw, and it is the same thing for her--just tell her no and she'll stop for a second. Have you tried the bitter apple stuff on her? |
Chumley was a licker when I got her six weeks ago. I was supposed to apply "Yuck" goo, which had no effect. Now I give her Dr. Choobles giant meaty bones from petsmart and she is too preoccupied with those to do any more licking on herself. The giant knuckle bone is like an endless gobstopper -- she's had one for a week and barely made a dent -- but she keeps trying.
Good luck! |
Thanks - I will try the bitter apple. What about that gobstopper??!! Is is messy?? Does it make the fur gooey?? It sounds like we need to try that treat! |
No, it is not messy at all. She cleans it thoroughly and even licks up her space afterwards. It hasn't had any impact on her face or paws. And it doesn't get soft or gooey like rawhide. Eventually, she can't make any more progress on the bone and I get her a new one. I love it. It is important to get a big one. She wolfs down the smaller ones in a few minutes but the big bone is magic. I am not actually sure it is the knuckle. It might be the knee. It is the biggest one short of the mammoth femur bone (which I may get her for xmas). You can see it in here.
