My beautiful puppy, Princess, is about 1 1/2 years old and weighs 55lbs. After her first heat cycle, she started having stomach and vomiting problems. My vet said she had acid reflux and prescribed Cimetidine. She would not eat and we would have to feed her one kibble at a time or make ground beef and rice instead of her dog food. She was later put on Purina special sensitive stomach dog food, which helped. She needs constant positive reinforcement before and during her feeding times. We also use plain yogurt and mix it with the kibble. Princess also can not eat raw hide or any other treats besides bread. Maybe this can be something that you can use. I hope everything goes well. |
Hi, How is Sammy? Did you get a second opinion from the vet? My dog is Dylan and he is 12 at the end of this month. He too normally eats quite a large amount but since the beginning of January has not been eating much at all. He too has been to the vets and has had all the tests. They found his liver was not functioning 100% but that the problem was only marginal. He was given a weeks worth of tablets to help with this and took them. The problem is he is still not eating. He is on medication for his legs and hips which the vet changed the last time we saw him which we think may be upsetting his system a little as obviously he has little food in his body. He too stares at the food, or moves away from it. He is drinking lots of water and also salivates a lot now. All of a sudden he will eat some mince or chicken etc and seems really hungry but often there are hours and hours inbetween these periods. I was just wondering if you had found anything out that could help your dog and Dylan too. He means everything to us and we are just so deperate for him to eat. |
Ashley,
The original post is older - so the person who posted it may not be around to answer. In terms of your dog - you mentioned that Dylan was on medication for arthritis. What medication? Some of these meds can have negative effects on liver functions. Also - do you know what medication they gave him for the liver concerns? In an older dog, not eating would be concerning (especially for a typically good eater). Did they do any other tests or Xrays? Not to scare you - but poor appetite is a common symptom in liver disease in dogs. Excessive drinking can be another sign - but this can also be a sign of other problems (diabetes, Cushings, kidney disease). All of which you would want to look into further. I would investigate the liver issues further and ensure that his lab results have improved. Hopefully everything is okay - I'll keep Dylan in my thoughts. I know how hard it is!!! Please keep me posted. Kristen |
Hi Kristen,
Thank you for your advice and your reply. Dylan picked up for a few days, was eating and up and about a lot more and we really thought we had turned a corner but unfortunately the medecine he was being given (PLT tablets) were upsetting his tummy and this led to sickness. He stopped eating again and was having increasing difficulty getting up. The vet confirmed that his problems were due to his liver no longer functioning properly and the only option was to have him put to sleep. I miss him so much. He is an amazing and beautiful dog and I will love him always. I really appreciate the support offered in this forum so thank you once again. Best regards Ashley |
Ashley,
I'm so sorry to hear about Dylan. I know how difficult it is for you. Please know that Dylan was met by many friends and he is grateful for your courage to help him move on. My thoughts and prayers are with you! Kristen |
Ashley I'm so sorry for your loss.... you did everything you could, and it sounds like you were a loving and wonderful sheepie friend to him, as I'm sure he was to you. That final decision is truly the hardest, but in many cases the kindest parting gift. |
