Clippers

I have decided to stop using the groomer I have gone to for almost 20 years...... (through most of my 14 years of owning a cocker spaniel and Taskers almost 9 years). It was a difficult decision but some things have happened over the last couple years that have greatly concerned me and after comparing notes with some other people who use the same groomer have decided to go with my gut.

I have been checking out other groomers and have discovered that most other groomers charge about triple what I have been paying. But for my own peace of mind I think I need to not return to where I have been going.

Soooooooo, being on a budget I've decided to try the "do it myself" route  I've done touch ups and trims but never the whole shebang. The clippers I have are woefully inadequate for clipping down a sheepie. Can anyone recommend a good AFFORDABLE clipper for giving Tasker a twice a year buzz cut?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
The Andis clippers that I have do the trick, and were on sale for about 60 dollars. I don't remember the regular price, I think 99...
I have osters too, but I hate them, they're too noisy and get hot too fast, despite oiling it etc.
I have the oster and they DO get really hot..Ive gotten blisters...let ME know whats better than those darn things...
This is the set I have...

Thanks Willowsprite, your link took me to the Andis site but not the specific model . Do you know which model you use? Maybe I should get the sheep shearer
Ooops.... lol....
I have the Pro Animal Home Clipper, listed at $86.99
Ironically, I am using it today, and after I posted that is the first time I've ever had a problem with it. I'm clipping Dancer down and it's getting stuck for apparently no reason, I've oiled it, adjusted it, cleaned it, everything I can think of but it's not helping. Dancer looks stupid, and I think she is embarassed. She looks all chunky and only about half done, LOL (After some classes with Dancer I have decided she is simply no show dog, staying glued to me like an extra sock on static-y pants out of the dryer, therefore I'm giving up on a show coat for her and concentrating on Sky)
I actually think the problem is the power supply within my house. I'm going to try another plug in a bit after Dancer and I take a break. LOL
hehehehe
I'm an e-bay nut so after checking thew clippers on your site I went to e-bay. I have a bid on a set of AGC-2 Ultra Edge Special Edition (new) clippers which list on your site for $142.00, I bid $80.00. If I get them it'll be a deal, if not I'll keep looking.

Petsmart wantsn $80-100.00 for a cut (depending on condition of coat and dogs behavior), they will only give you an estimate. At that price I can afford to get my own set of clippers AND LEARN.

Must be somewhere you can go to take dog grooming 101!!!!!!!!!
I have 2 Osters and an Andis (the oldest Oster is 25 years old, so they do last) All clippers get hot, I think the Osters a bit more. Most are not designed for clip a whole dog taking 45 minutes or so----if I'm moving quickly! So I've learned to change off blades, use the Cool Lube, and most of all, don't do the whole thing at once.

Sure you dogs will look funny half done, but slow down, even if it takes you two days to complete. You want the experience to be pleasant for both of you since you'll be doing it several times a year. Use the special rewards after each session, start with short sessions.

Don't worry about mistakes, they grow out.
So, No votes for the sheep shears HUH?
I've thought about it, I'd be afraid of nicking the dog.........but I can't explain why I feel that way. Do you think if we ran a dog through a shearing pen they'd notice? Somehow a dog isn't as calm as a sheep, one flip onto it's butt and the dog would put up a fuss. Pity, sheep shearing goes so quickly. Have you seen shears for sale??

sheepieboss
Yup, when I went to the Andis site they has a section for horse, cow, and sheep...................... Maybe I could just take Tasker to the local Fair and enter him in the 4H sheep shearing contest, one of the kids might need a sheep to shear  Maybe the judge wouldn't notice.
until they barked
$335.......that's a bit steep! Since I have an Oster one speed 25 years old, a two speed about 15 years old (that I've dropped and buggered up, just haven't gotten replacement parts), and a 1 year old Andis, I don't think I'm in the market for new clippers.....especially at $335. For that price I want some Australian hunk to come and clip the dogs twice a year!
Hopefully my $80.00 e-bay bid will pan out...... 2 hours and 40 minutes left.

I have an Oster Home Animal clipper Model 96-01E the blade says size medium 1.5 mm, it's actually fairly new but I've never been able to clip much of anything with it, trim feet, face etc. Forget anycoat of substance. When I bought it the salesperson at Agway assured me it would cut a sheepdoag coat but it won't. It wasn't cheap, I think I pait $75.00 for it....
IIRC, I got good prices at Cherrybrook ( www.cherrybrook.com ) but it was a LOOOOOONG time ago.
Just checked em out Ron, they even sell Barber GERMACIDE :D :D :D :D What a deal!!!!!
Where's the link for the hot Australian guy? Does OES.org get a commission for that too?

I'm waiting..........
Well, I am the proud owner of a Andis AGC 2 Ultra Edge Special Edition clippers (EHHHH 8O ), or will be when they are delivered. Sorry Maxm, no Australian hunk (my boyz might get jealous.

Now HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP. What the heck do I do with the darn things. Last night I was doing a bit of a butt trim on poor Tasker and I thought ohhhhhhhh you poor baby you have noooooooo idea what you are in for!!!

I'd like to get him clipped before we head for vacation so hopefully they'll arrive the end of next week. I'll set up a "One week Shaving Plan" Day One: Right Fore Leg, Day Two: Left Fore Leg Day Three: Chest and Under Belly............................

Well Thanks for your input.
Ginny,
Congratulations on the Andis clippers!
Good luck with grooming Tasker and Ty.

If you need shears, check this out 8O 8O

I was researching scizzors/shears, this site came up.
I'm sure they are great, but what an investment!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When scissors come with their own alligator (genuine) case you KNOW you can't affor them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG! $1800 for a pair of shears?
Well OF COURSE SILLY!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't you order a couple???? What else would you get to go with a $1000.00 leash and $900.00 collar (that was leather, there was no price listed for the alligator). Personally I think Tasker s holding out for diamonds.
Ginny, I think it might be a good idea to do Taskers Back, head, and butt one day and leave the legs and belly for the next day...Panda hates those the most....dont get too frustrated...give a lot of breaks...it actually gives you time to clean the hair up from the floor......and take your time! If it takes you two or three days, so be it! Tasker will love you not matter what he looks like...take it from me......if it were my stepdaughter, we wouldnt have been on speaking terms for almost two years now...lol...MY only advise is, try to keep him higher up..ie a table of some sort....doing it on the ground REALLY hurts your back!!!!!
We may be on the 10 day plan............ I'll produce a docudrama.
MY CLIPPERS HAVE ARRIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have read the directions......what little there are. And PLEASE dont' think I'm really stupid But................... I didn't know you had to oil the blades..............maybe THAT's why my Oster's didn't work very well

There is a piece of paper in the box that says IN BIG RED LETTERS
CAUTION WATCH for blade heat!
Use your Andis blade oil often

What is OFTEN????????????????????????

It also says "Because od the higher speed, you will have to replace your blade drive more often. If your clipper appears to be running vine, but seems to lack power, or your blades all leave stread, it may be that your blade drive is no longer ............." Has anyone had to do this?

What are the two speeds for? When do you use which speed?

It came with a 10 blade, will that do?

How often do the blades need to be sharpened and how do you get them sharpened or do you just buiy a new blade? Do you take the blade off to clean it every time you use it??

I took a quic swipe or two down Taskers chest and it seems to cut nicely. We may be on the 15 minutes a day plan till all is trimmed :D
Congrats on your new clippers. :) I'm a big fan of Oster - they just seem to hold up better (but we were grooming 25+ dogs a day also). I have several blades of all sizes so I just exchanged them when they got hot.

The 10 blade will pretty much take off all his hair (he'll have enough to cover his body but not much more). :) If I were to shave Jasper, I'd use the 10 or the 9 on him & just let the hair start growing over.

I don't oil my blades, but I do use cool lube on them. I always find out when the blade sharpener is coming by where I used to work and have him sharpen mine also - when they need it. He oils them for me too. I just don't really use them anymore, so I don't have much need to oil them often.

And $1800 for shears - ouch! I thought I was crazy for paying nearly $300 for mine! lol
I do find they work a lot better when you oil them often. You should oil them before using them, during and after, before you put them away (to prevent rust)
It took 4 days to finish poor Dancer.... lol... I skipped one day though. Normally I do it all in one day, taking breaks, about 3 or 4, through the process. She still looks a little scruffy because I was trying to leave a bit more fur on her and not shav her right ot the skin. Oh well...lol... she's sooo soft.
Hello everyone from Blue Star's Mom!

I've been busy at school (summer session), so I haven't had time to check the site as often as I usually did. I have a couple of weeks off until the Fall session starts so I decided to take a look--

As a groomer I've seen many clippers come and go. I've used Oster, Andes and Wahl and the ones that work the best are Kim Laube. They cut through sheepdog fur like butter. That's matted fur, too. They cost about $160.- $180, but it's worth it! It comes with a #10 blade. I would
recommend buying a skip tooth #7 and a #4F blade. Later you can buy a
#30 and guides to attach to it for the "puppy cut" look. The #7 skip tooth is what I use for cutting through the heavy matts or clumps. This has to be used carefully on the legs and belly because it can cause a cut easily. Practice makes perfect. Let the clipper do it's job; don't push too hard!
The #10 blade can be used in the delicate places like under the arms, legs and tummy.

As far as keeping the blades cool, get a spray can of Cool Lube. Test the blade on the back of your hand periodically. I would say every 10 minutes or so. If it's hot to your hand, it needs a full shot of spray until it feels cool again to the touch. After using your blades, take an old toothbrush and brush out hair and debris and clean the blades thouroughly
with any cleaner for blades like Dr. Slick or a Clippercide. Then oil just before you put them away. If you practice this method, your equipment will last a long time to come. Also blow out the top of the clipper where the blades attach to keep hair out of the housing.

You can find a pair of Laube clippers by looking on line and search Kim Laube. If you search long enough, you might find a cheaper deal or a sale. The blades and cleaners I use are found at Pet Edge.com where I shop on line.

Good Luck to you all--If you have any questions feel free to ask--bsm
So I can't use the #10 for the whole shebang? Do you know if pet stores or Agway sell blades? I had hoped to start this weekend.
Ginny, I have a 10 blade and then I have a 1/4" guard for it..I use that on Panda all over...I wouldnt use just the 10, it will take him down to 1/16. With the guard on though, its more foolproof.....
This didn't come with a guard, unless the oster guard fits which I doubt!!

Hey Darcy how goes with the no smokes?????
I dont know if the oster guard will fit, its worth a shot.....you can do it the really hard way....use a comb as a guard, but youll need someone else to hold tasker....with the guard on the clipper I can hold her with one hand and clip away with the other...a comb would work though, I think it will take more time and patience though :D

the day is almost over and still no cig....still holdin' strong :D
Just got home,. doesn't fit, grrrrrrrrrrr :? I doubt Doug would have the patience to hold him, I'll have to see what I can figure out..... darn!

:clappurple: Congrats on another smoke free day, does this make 3???? Make sure you reward yourself for each milestone (1wk, 2wks etc)
After reading this thread I was reminded of my first experience with sheepdog shearing: (and first experience with a sheepie). Several years ago my son and daughter-in-law moved in with me with their 2-3 yr old sheepdog (also named Maggie) and German short haired pointer, joining me and Laddie (collie) for a 2 yr stint. Maggie was terribly matted and after trying to groom them they were advised that they should start from scratch. They bought a Wahl pet clipper and proceeded to do the job in the evenings when they came home from work. in the basement. The project went on for perhaps a week (after 10pm when I was trying to sleep). The clipper sounded like a buzz saw; one would hold the dog, the other would sheer. When they finally finished the dog was naked as a new born babe. :D She looked horrible, but was much happier. I still have the clipper. I've turned it on several times while grooming Barney and it was so loud it scared him.
hehehehehe, hopefully we'll have a bit better luck!! The new clipper is actually quite quiet and Tasker is matt free so far!! It is my inexperience and clumsiness that will be the handicap 8O
Dancer looks like she was clipped with a chainsaw, I did an awful job, because I was trying to leave a bit more fur. I did leave a bit more fur, she is so soft and cuddly, but she looks so silly... thank goodness her coat grows fast!
Hi All,
I just purchased an ANDIS AGC SUPER 2 TWO SPEED DOG HORSE ANIMAL CLIPPERS, It comes with a #10 blade also Comes with 4 bonus brand new Andis UltraEdge blades
4FC Blade + 5FC Blade + 7FC Blade +30 Blade
Got a really good deal on ebay for a brand new unit for $137.00
OK....Now what do I use for a regular cut???
Or if someone could explain how short each blade will leave the hair.
Thanks
George,
I had to laugh at your post about the clippers sounding like a buzzsaw.
The first set of clippers I was using in the dogs was 30+ year old set by Oster...talk about LOUD. No wonder my Poodle hated them. He was also shaved down to the pink...lol because the guards wouldn't work so I had to use whatever the standard blade was... Poor Pink Poodle!..lol
Elissa
Actually if I remember correctly it will give you all those specifications right on the Andis site...
We've been clipping all weekend.............. At first I was hoorified at what I was doing to poor Tasker but it's not turning out too bad. I should have waited for the blades (as I said I was going to but got inpatient and didn't....) However, we are headed for vacation to the ocean in a couple weeks and I think I'll be glad he is nice a short with the water and the sand. I'm going to take a picture and post it when we are done, but we still have some "finishing" to do.

We have been doing the clipping in 15-20 minute segments throughout the weekend and actually I am surprised at how quickley it has gone. Basically yesterday we had 3 sessions and today just one. I suspect one more and we'll be done. The Andis clipper does indeed cut like butter through the fur. Tasker has been incredibly patient, I never expected him to stand so very still (the bag of pork rinds I bribed him with helped).

It is a bit shorter than I would have liked but I made a couple of "ooooops" and in order to straighten it out" wound up taking off more than I intended

I do have a question about clipping around his "bits and pieces"........ Tasker is neutered so there are no testicles to worry about (Thanks be to God) but I'm afraid I'm going to nick something "vital" so have been a bit cautious thus far in the nether regions. Can the clipper nick??????? How do you co about the belly and between the legs???

I have found a nice arrangement to clip him by tethering him to my deck and standing on the grond, he is at just the right height. I did get the hair on his face too shrot but it's a learning experience.......
sounds like youre doing a great job....you better post some pic's of tasker and his new do... :D
