Question about breeders

I am new to this forum, but not new to Old English Sheep dogs. My husband and I got our Astro when he was 5 weeks old. That was a little over 10 years ago and August 1, 2005 we had to make the toughest desicion of our lives to help him along to Heaven. He had liver cancer that had spread to his spleen and possibly kidneys. He was, in every sense of the word, our baby. We miss him terribly and have been thinking of getting a puppy to try and fill a bit of the emptiness in this house. I have noticed that their are breeders that charge more for a girl than a boy. I don't understand the logic behind this and am wondering why. We don't want to breed her just love her. We think it might be easier to get a girl so we don't try and compare or confuse memories between the two. We don't want to share nicknames either. How will we know when we are in the presence of a truly caring breeder? What is the average cost in buying a new puppy? We have seen prices between $500-$800. I'm so glad that I found this forum. I haven't posted before, but reading all of your stories during this terrible time have greatly helped me.

Hi Sherry,
So sorry to hear the news about Astro. Its always a difficult
decision, but he is now safe and at a peaceful place.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

ask a breeder and what to look for.

Best wishes!
I'm glad you found this place. Zahra's advice is excellent. As an experiences OES owner, I would also urge you to consider adopting one of the many wonderful sheepdogs available on www.petfinder.com. Even if you don't see one you like immediately, you should keep checking because, sadly, there are always new dogs coming online that need loving homes. That's where I found my own dear Chumley, thanks to a link posted on this forum.

Best,

Valerie
In my experience breeders of any type of dog don't charge more for a male or a female. But your cost may depend on pet quality or show quality.

I think $500 is on the low end of the cost you will find out there. I would not be shocked if you run into the $1,000 - $1,500 range (US dollars).
Thank you all for your advice and help and thoughts. We had considered rescuing one, but we are in the final stages of adopting from S. Korea and we wanted to be able to raise a puppy with our son. Our son should arrive in the next 2 months and we figured we could potty train a little sheepgirl in that time (or at least set a foundation). Thank you again for your replies!
Sherry
The breeder I used to get my pup has planned parenthood. So if you pay a deposit towards a future litter, it is a total of 800 plus s/h if needed. If you choose a puppy after they are born, price goes up depending on sex, markings, eye color and so on. They also provide screened puppies for a price.
