We want to try everything we can...does anyone have info...the doctor is not familiar w/Sheepies....is it better to keep his hair long? Should we bathe him often--what will that do to his coat? My daughter is 4 yrs old and the two of them are buddies..any advice would be appreciated... |

I'm not sure it matter how long or short since the allergens are not the hair but the stuff on the hair. (long hair will trap other possible allergens such as pollen) Regular brushing and bathing with attention given to the shampoo and conditioner (if used) so as not to come across more problems. So for that matter, shorter hair and a good brushing daily with twice a month bath?? The bath can be quite drying on the skin so increasing or decreasing will depend on the dog's ability to handle the baths. |
Frequently it is the dog's saliva to which people are allergic.
There have been several posts on this subject on the forum, about whether the OES is a hypoallergenic dog or not, and the consensus seems to be that it is not. Keep the hair shorter and bathed often, but it's probably not going to be an acceptable solution. |
This site has suggestions on enviromental controls
for people who are allergic to dogs. There is also a discussion board... www.sweet-lucys.com/allergictodogs.html Good luck ! |
My twin is allergic to dogs...(im allergic to cats)...go figure...any way...it doesnt matter how much I clean or groom Panda...or the house for that matter....she has an asama attack if she is in my house for more than 15 minutes.....and I CLEAN.....she cant have Panda lick her, she breaks out into hives....she takes alot of benydril...that helps with the hives but not with the asama....sorry.... |
Technically OES are considered to be Hyper-Allergenic because they have hair and not fur. I was also diagnosed as being allergic to dogs as a child and I grew up with an OES. No problems with her at all.
I would also agree with SheepieBoss that keeping the dogs hair short would probably be better. My question to you is does your daughter seem to have problems around the dog? I know that they say allergy testing is not really reliable. I was also diagnosed as being allergic to milk and all dairy product and was taken off them from the time I was 6 to 11 yrs old. I still had the same "allergy attacks" dizziness, nausea...when I wasn't eating these foods. At age 11 I was retested and the Dr said I didn't have allergies to these items at all and if I even did they were very minor. I did however have allergies to dust and mold and starting receiving allergy shots on a month basis. Not painful at all. Good Luck! Elissa |
