Hard Chewer - Toy Recommendations

Hendrix loves chewing on stuff animals. Now that he's nearly 7 months he rips those things apart within minutes. We give him bones and that occupies his time, but they make the hair by his paws turn yellow and sticky.

Is there anything someone can suggest, stuff animal wise, that's tough for dogs to chew on? Should I be looking for something in particular? He currently has the Kong, a rope and a nylabone. All of which he's ripped up pretty good.

I found a rubber tire toy that worked pretty well at either PetsMart or Walmart - I can't remember. It has a rope attached to it, too.

Also, found this website with durable soft toys. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.

I just bought two new teddy bears last night as my furkids' stuffed animals are in sad shape. Most of their stuffing is gone and they needed to be replaced. :(

Good Luck! :D
I think it's a stage. Bailey spent about a month ripping up every toy he could get his paws on, but after he turned 7 months he mellowed out a bit. He still loves to chew, but he's starting to be more gentle with the stuffed toys. And he hasn't shredded a tennis ball in a while either.

He's a big fan of the Booda Bimple bones and they do turn his paws orange (cheeseburger flavor!) but they keep his teeth super clean so we just wash his paws more often. Jill recommeded Dingo compressed rawhides and he loves those too, I just need to keep an eye on them and cut off the soggy parts. And I just ordered an Indestructable Ball from dog.com - we'll see

There was a great thread about this a while back but I can't find it to link it, maybe someone else can?
Lol. I think it's more of a mellow stage on the way back to chewing again Bailey's mom! Actually, it's more strength than chewing I think. Clyde clamps on and I tug and there goes the toy!

I feel your pain, I've had to try a lot of stuff myself and this is what I found. Clyde tears everything apart but he loves his stuffed toys so much that I hate to just take them away. One thing as far as durability that I've found are toys made by Bamboo (www.bamboo.com). They're made of a heavy duty canvas that they claim is virtually indestructible. So far, they're right but Clyde doesn't find them as fun as stuffed animals-- they just aren't as soft. They are great for tugging and throwing and retrieving though.

My other suggestion is buying them in bulk from eBay. For about $15 (shipping included) I got about 25 toys in one lot from a supplier. Most were stuffed animals then there are a couple of ropes and a treat or two in the lot. At that price, I don't mind when he tears them apart. I just have to watch him to make sure he doesn't eat the stuffing. Yesterday I woke up to him yanking the stuffing out of an open neck wound on his Shrek donkey. He seems so sad when I have to throw them away! Also, his Migrator pheasant lasted the the longest out of all his toys. He'd had that since 4 months and I just had to throw it away about 3 weeks ago.

I hope that helps. I'm also on the eternal search for the soft, indestrucible toy!
We have a couple of things that seem indestructable. One of them is the Fetch & Flash ball. (Couldn't find a link to it on Petco so no forum percentage.) I think I bought ours at Walmart or Target or another discount store. The dogs chew on it like crazy and other than one or two fang marks it's been great. It also makes them look evil when they have it in their mouths and it's glowing!

We also have an Earth Ball. (Couldn't find any links for these!) I bought it at a dog show. They claim that it's indestructable and even offer a lifetime guarentee. They haven't even been able to put a mark in it and it's pretty soft for their mouths.

I think I should have Norman be a toy tester. He doesn't really destroy much but he can flatten one of the big kongs. I'd hate to see what would happen if he actually clamped down on something living!
The other two tear apart soft toys like there's no tomorrow. Nothing like walking into the living room and seeing stuffing everywhere. Oh the humanity!!!!
We found something at the local groomers that are pretty tough. I have not seen them at Petsmart or Petco. Our dogs love them and always fight over a particular one. They have about 6 toys made of this stuff and they are their favorite things to chew on.

They are made by West Paw Designs. I found their website, it is http://www.westpawdesign.com

I believe they are the Zogoflex toys. I could not get the pictures to come up when I looked at their site. I got the name off of one of the toys. We have the bone shaped toys and the balls. The bone shaped things are what they play with the most.

My wife's daughter had us get one for her Golden Retreiver for the same reason, nothing else would hold up, and he loves it.

We never has any luck with soft toys. I tried a couple once and they lasted about 5 minutes.

Hopefully, that helps some.

Eric
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, time to go shopping!
My German Shepherd was a very destructive chewer. We used to get him the Nylabones for Strong Chewers..it's hard not soft. They would last quite a while. ( They have different one's for different rated chewers )
The puppy ones are really soft.
Pepsi has the rubber tire that Beaureguard's Mom mentioned but he managed to eat the rope and didn't want anything to do with it after the rope was gone
