Eating Files

It's summertime, and it's time for Lennon's favorite pastime: FlyChase!

He can stand very still, just moving his eyes when a fly comes in the house, studiest it and then... GULP!! He jumps and eats the fly in mid air... yuck!

Do your sheepies do the same thing? Is that actually harmful for them?

Not my sheepie but Lucy does it. It's amazing-- she's better than the Karate Kid. She doesn't eat them though. She just enjoys the catch and leaves me the dead fly on the floor to clean up!
Barney doesn't. He just looks at all the various bugs that come in. My parents' sheepdog catches and eats them, though. And my cats go nuts for anything that flies or crawls on the walls. They'll eat them too...
Mine can't catch them......all I hear is teeth banging together.
I can't imagine Tasker being able to move that fast!!!!!! 8O
My dogs don't chase bugs but my cats do. Winston is a huge fan of moths, and he eats them... even the BIG ones. Yuck.
Tecumseh loves june bugs. he will chase them up the walls, over whatever or whoever is in his way.
GG chases them, and butterflies, and grasshoppers, and dragonflies, and and and! He has never caught one! :D It is especially frusterating when they are in the house! 8O

The cats don't bother with them at all! :x

Colleen and Gucci George=>Flies are FUN!
None of mine chase bugs but Luke and Rosco think they can outrun the rabbits they see
Pud doesn't bother with the flying bugs, he thinks that is too much trouble. Our Border Collie on the other hand will chase anything in the air. He loves to go after bees and wasps at the hunting camp. You would think that after the first fifty times he was stung that he would stop. Not him though, you just things our sheepies can be stubborn. Mr Shep (aka Roo Roo) has Pud beat!
Barney gave a super slow-speed chase yesterday evening to the biggest black and white butterfly I have ever seen. He was sitting on the lawn and looked up as this butterfly just floats past his nose. Barney, looking mesmerized the whole time, slowly stands up and walks behind it, stopping when it stops, moving on when it moves...It was so cute! I wish I had my camera or video with me...
I was surprised though, that he could be so gentle--I thought the butterfly would be a goner...
OH MY! I think Barney met Bart! :D If you go to the Rainbow Bridge posts you will see our story of a black and white butterfly, that I've renamed Bartfly!

Your story melted my heart! :)

I was thinking about Bartfly as I was reading her post!! I've still never seen a black and white butterfly.
Bob loves to try to catch bugs and butterflies also to no avail. Also, he's fascinated with airplanes! He just stands gaping mouth looking up at the sky when they fly over! He reminds me of a little kid when he does that!

You mean their mouths actually close? I'll believe it when I see it! :P
Wow.... I Tought I was alone here and had a karake kid wannabe sheepdog. Looks like it's common trait :D

How big was that butterfly? Here we have small B/W butterflies, but they look more like moths.
I've read that post on the Rainbow Bridge and I thought of the sheepie too when I saw the butterfly. Maybe that's why Barney was so gentle--he sensed it was Bart passing through, just visiting sheepies around the country.
The butterfly was about the size of a baseball (obviously just wing span, not the body part). I have never seen one that big before...that's another reason I thought it was Bart--it would have to be a big butterfly to have morphed from a sheepie!
boo doesnt bother with the flies but my other two dogs are all you can hear is the constant snapping of the jaws.
Panda will chase anything that flies....butterflies, moths, flies, bee's and those big black buzzing things out here (scary and nasty) and she chases gecko's..if it move, she will chase...lol
Pepsi also loves trying to catch flies and crickets. He also chases butterflies but doesn't try to eat them.
Harley eats yellow jackets  What a dope!.... But I have said that before. I have seen him go after one after another... That's gotta hurt.
You think he'd realize that they hurt....but then again my upright son keeps playing with them and getting stung... The big problem is he is allergic and swells up. He tells me "Mom, I wasn't playing with it, I just touched it" BOYS!!!

I've never noticed him chasing flies, but he chases birds! So funny to watch.
Norman and Carl both like to chase flying objects. Carl usually gets bored and gives up about 10 seconds into it. The other night I fixed his ponytail and all of a sudden he became fixated with a point high on the wall. (Anybody who's seen The Grudge will know why this was totally creepy!) He was locked into a tiny moth. Apparently his eyesight is better than I thought.

Norman, in his younger days, actually could catch low flying birds. He grabbed one and dropped it right on my husband's foot once. He also thinks that he can catch rabbits but after about 5 or 6 steps he gives up. The old guy just can't keep up with the rabbits anymore.

Toby is sticking to ground animals. He caught a little mole the other day! Totally gross!
It was so weird last night after responding to this thread I heard a commotion outside. I went out there and Peanut & Pepsi were playing with a praying mantis. I even watched Peanut step on it. Then it moved and he jumped back...lol
They chased it until it got caught in a spiderweb on the bottom of our Jacuzzi. When it wasn't moving anymore the dogs got bored. I rescued it from the spider's web, But I guess Little Peanut must have damaged his wings.

Bailey bit the tail off a little gecko one day. I'm not sure who was more surprised - Bailey or the gecko. I wasn't sure what he was playing with, then I saw the flash of the gecko run off and Bailey looked up at me with the tail in his mouth. IT WAS STILL WIGGLING! I screamed. Fortunately for all involved, the gecko was just fine and is growing his tail back. I'll bet he hides pretty quick when Bailey comes out into the yard now!
Thankfully we do not have geckos! 8O Just some frogs, I'm very glad they do not have tails!

Colleen and Gucci George=>what's a gecko? Sounds like FUN!
