First time owners' question

We have a 6 month old pup (our first OES) who gets very bad clumps of what I asssume is dried urine on the inside of his backs legs; I tried bathing him myself but was unable to get them out. We called a groomer who said they would shave "the entire area" to prevent this type of problem. My question is, did she mean just the groin area, or is she planning the shave the inside of his legs? I assume the former and will ask when we drop him off, but would like to hear if anyone else has had this problem.

I can't help but I can see -- what a cute picture!! Looking forward to stories. . .
It sounds like what you're describing is dried urine that worked itself into mats and tangles. Is he still being house broken and is peeing on himself? The boys get definite splash back when going and this can make a big mess. Clyde doesn't lift his leg and often pees on his front foot. Shaving around the groin area would keep it from getting wet and matting there and I'd suggest shaving the insides of his legs too if you really can't get the clumps out. It would be better to start fresh and much easier on your boy than the yanking and pulling that would take to get it out-- not to mention having to save you from picking through urine soaked hair! :)
Maybe it's the way I shave Jasper - all the way from the behind to where his belly button should be. :) Then I shave down the inside of the back legs - keeps it from getting pee over him and matting up. Hope I explained that okay!

When you say shaved, do you mean down to the level of the skin? I guess tha would make sense, it just seems like it would make him looky funny (well, funnier  )
We have the same problem. Our guys is in full coat, so we live with it, until grooming time. Then we attack it with a slicker brush while he stands up. Works like a charm until we get him a bath.
There's a "sanitary clip" where the hair is either trimmed close, shaved leaving about 1/2 inch or shorter. For boys it starts from the belly button and goes to the end and then down the innter legs....not all the way unless your boy is really sloppy........and then the poop chute is opened. To prevent dingle-berries, keep the poop chute open.

On females the trim is around the privates and down the legs as necessary....and up the poop chute.

Where hair rubs against hair you will get mats. Either plan on brushing these near daily, or trim them out. There will be more than enough hair to hide the shorter cuts.
Toby is in a show coat and has the inside of his legs and belly area shaved. When it's first done it is right down to the skin and you can't really tell. From what would be his knees (in people terms) down to his feet is graduated from short to long to help with this too.
That was one of the biggest things I noticed when I had Frazzle here... he had a stronger odor, partly because he is male I think, and partly because he never lifts his leg, just arches his back a little and pees, getting it all over his back AND front legs. His owner has since shaved him down....

Clyde's is like that too and, other than the rare strong pee that he's held for awhile, he never pees on himself anymore even though he just squats too.
I talked to some of the show folks at the show the other weekend and they said that they shave the belly up to the ribs and the inside of the legs too. In the front of the belly you shave it to follow the shape of the ribs up to a point where they meet at the base of the sternum.
