My baby hurt himself! :( :( :(

:( I am so upset right now. I bought Spike a huge (and I do mean huge) basted steer knuckle bone (I think that's what it's called?) this past weekend and gave it to him outside, as the package recommended. He didn't seem too interested in it initially but then once leaving him outside to "do his business" I discovered while watching him through the window that he was very taken with the bone and with some difficulty managed to pick it up and was trying to take it around with him. This didn't bother me so I figured he was just looking for a good place to gnaw on it. 20 or 30 minutes later I called him in to find a FILTHY faced Spike. I gave him a mini-bath and didn't think much of it until this morning when I let him outside as I got ready to go to work and finally when I let him back in (about 30 minutes later) the top of his gorgeous black nose was all SCRAPED up and bright PINK!!! :( I don't know how he did it or how it relates to the bone (was he digging trying to bury it and cut it on something?) but he had never had this happen before.

So I just got home a little while ago from going out to dinner with my mom who's visiting and I let him outside. Not even 3 minutes later I hear him barking and go outside to see what the problem is and my boy's nose is COVERED in blood!!! 8O  Needless to say I have now thrown away the bone but I'm scared that it wasn't the bone he had cut it on and I have no clue what could have done that to my baby. I've put some bacitracin on the cut after cleaning it but I really don't want anything else to happen again to him.

Have any of your dogs ever done anything similiar? Do they eventually heal? This might sound silly, I'm not trying to be shallow but I found my puppy's big black nose to be quite gorgeous and am not prepared to have a "damaged" doggy, even though I will love him with all my heart no matter what. I truly hope he heals and ends up with his pigment again. My poor baby, I'm afraid to let him out of my sight in my yard now.

(Sorry for the novel, I'm just really upset.)

Poor Spike!

Give him a rub for me (behind the right ear) and one for Joan (behind the left ear) please, and a hug from both of us.
Oh my! Poor Spike! I haven't heard of this before, but I would really watch his every move out in the yard in case it isn't the bone.

I understand, I love the big black noses too! I'm sure it will heal up fine! Maybe a call to the vet? Please keep in mind that I'm one of those mommys that rush to the vet if GG looks at me funny! :?

Give him a big kiss for us!
Colleen and Gucci George=>Spike, when something starts hurting, you've got to stop doing what you are doing Buddy!
Poor doggie! Was there anything particularly sharp or jagged about the bone when you retrieved it? Is it possible that someone tried to fight him for the bone? I hope someone has experience here about whether scraped and bloody black noses go back to being black. . . I feel so sorry for Spike.
Poor Spike! :(

If it were me, I'd probably go see the vet, too. But, like Colleen, I go if my babies sneeze...LOL. :?

Give him belly rubs for me. :)
Don't want to freak you out but it might take a while for the pigment to come back. Our dog when he was a pup got scratched by another dog on his nose and it seemed like it took a really long time before the nose turned back again. Maybe it will depend on how deep it is.

I'm glad he at least enjoyed the bone!!??
Thanks so much for all the well wishes, Spike certainly enjoyed his hugs, rubs, and kisses :) . I spoke to the vet this morning who said it really depends on how deep the scratch on his nose is but it should hopefully heal over time. Since I got rid of the bone, he hasn't had any problems outside yet. I hope that he never does again or I'm going to have to watch his every move!!
Poor baby. Hope he heals quickly.
Oh my, I'm sorry to hear that Spike had such a bad time with that big mean bone  I have to think that his nose will heal with time. I'm very over protective as well and feel silly sometimes about worrying alot but that makes you a good mommy, and Spike is lucky to have you. Lots of hugs for you Spike :) from Max and Sharon
Hope Spike is feeling better!
The area on his nose should heal well. Keep the area
clean and watch for infection.

So sorry the big bad steer bone wrestled with him,
sounds like it would have been fun if there were
no problems....
Me and the kids hope Spike is feeling better!

That is weird about the bone.

Madison's nose got scraped up once and had some pink showing, but it healed up fine and is all black once again.

Good Luck!
Poor Spike!!! Panda sends her love and licks.....
Mean old bone  Daisy sends Spike a big kiss and the boys send treats.
