Seem that since the day he turned 6 mnths old and got his first "real" mat, this boy has had one or a hundred constantly!!! lol must be an age limit when they start to get them like the big dogs do. Now I find myself rereading all the grooming and mat threads in here lol |

Yes, 6 months seems to be the time that they start appearing! Good luck, hope it isn't as humind as it is here! That really seems to make it way worse!

Lol. I was the same way. I couldn't understand what everyone was talking about. Then they came...and came..and came. We just got back from the groomer and they did a great job. They left him fluffy but thinned him out and got rid of literally all the mats. I should've tipped even more! |
Yep... the first 6 months are pretty much a free ride as far as grooming goes. Of course getting them used to it before the mats appear is so very important. That makes grooming so much easier if they have learned young to lie still on the table, as well as having feet and bum trimmed, ears cleaned, toenails done etc.
I've learned keeping a dog in show coat is virtually impossible if you don't start from day one with that in mind. Even a dog who is not going to be shown, but who the owner wants to keep in full coat, needs at least half an hour a day from the 6-18 months stage, then for a pet coat, maybe an hour every 4 or 5 days. I haven't yet found a grooming routine that keeps my dogs mat free if they more than 3 inches of coat. Dancer is up to almost 4 inches now, and is matting on her chest and had some mats behind her ears. I got the ones from her ears and will be tackling the ones on her chest tonight I think.... |
Welcome to the club!!! It's kinda like when you watch other peoples children and say "not MY child"!!! HEHEHEH, happens to the best of us!!! |
