We need a little luck too... and advice

We are in the final stages of going to meet a potential rescue over the weekend. I've seen lots of posts on here about questions to ask, but my mind is a little garbled and I'm just imagining this lovely animal coming to live with us and where he will slepp, and what toy will be his favorite, all rational thoughts have gone to the wind.

What should I ask the foster mom? I've never had a boy, what are particular things that are "male" issues that I should be looking for? What should I look for when he meets Chelsea and they play together?

Help!

Thanks
Up.

Good luck and best wishes to you and Chelsea ! :clappurple:
Up, Good LUCK! :D

I wonder if you are able to have an inital meeting with the pups? And then another? I know that when we were going to adopt a Golden Retriever a couple of months ago, I brought GG over and we watched the 2 of them interact, Mimi (G.R.) was pretty obvious about not caring to play with GG! So that made the choice for us! Even if they had gotten along, I would have wanted to have a second visit just to make sure! :D We are waiting to hear word on Murphy, an OES rescue, and I will do this with him as well!

Is the boy intact or neutered? I have always had boys and honestly, I find them way more laid back then all the girl dog friends we have! 8O I bet it will be Chelsea that is the BOSS! :D I also am a strong believer in all dogs have different personalties, regardless of sex, so you will just have to discover his! :D

Please keep us posted! I am sending you all the positive energy and luck I can muster!

Colleen and Gucci George=>waiting anxiously to hear from Murphy! :)
Good luck! I hope it all goes well :)
I've had both girl and boy dogs over the years, and I think I prefer the girls, but there is no really no reason other than there is my daughter and I and then my hubby and 3 boys so I feel outnumbered. LOL
If they are neutered I think the boys seem to calm down at a younger age than the girls perhaps...
From what I have heard in homes with more than one dog, an older female is usually alpha... but I think each situation is unique.
Hi Up-

I have 3 boys and 1 girl. Daisy very much rules the roost although she is the youngest. She has a strong personality and lets the boys know when she's not happy with them or feels they have been "bad". They all get along well but that may be because they are all close in age and have always been with each other. Good luck :D
Thanks for the advice- I have a feeling Chlsea will be the stronger personality- she has it in bunches!

I just received a picture of him ( ! )- I don't know if I'll be able to wait until Sunday. His foster mom says that everyday she reminds him that one day he will have a "Furever" home, and that it seems to calm him. Sigh, I'm a big mushball, I'm already planning what sort of cool comforter he will get from Target and what sort of toys we plan to buy. I really hope he and Chelsea are compatible.

Actually, I really wish I had the room and the resources to take them all in- when I get my wish and buy and farm in the country that will double as an OES sanctuary - will you all come visit? And bring your dogs?

Up.

(I know you think I'm kidding- but we shall see!)
Where is he now? Should I ask what rescue you are going through? And you are expected to attend the Sheepiefest in Zion in October. With BOTH your dogs!

Can you post the picture? :D :D :?: :?:
Up,

We will come visit your sheepie farm! :D

I would love to have one too! We have 40 acres but cannot even get the first fence in because of bedrock! So that would be a CRAZY sheepie sanctuary! All running around, willy-nilly! Probably not good!

I'm so excited for you!

Up,

So excited for you. Looking forward for more updates!
Last week I adopted Fozzy, bringing our fur kids to four (2 oes, 1 sheltie,1brittany). While the initial meetings are important, remember that they take place away from your dogs home. I have found that my dogs act differently when they are on someone else's turf. My sheltie is a tiger at home, and a real wuss in a stranger's home.

I asked Fozzy's mom a ton of questions. Some were about feeding issues(how he might react when being fed with other dogs) storms, riding in cars, signals he might use when needing to go out, stairs, other fears.

While are her answers were helpful, I found that adding Fozzy to the mix completely upset the applecart. My sheltie, who had been highstrung and unwilling to play now shows signs of being submissive and eagerly joins in the OES's games.

You just never know what you are going to get until you mix em all together!
Good Luck!!

I have never adopted a rescue but I would think an important thing would be a "trial" period. All the questions in the world aren't as imprtant as the actual experience of having the puppy in your home and seeing how it all works out over a period of time. Sometimes its a match and sometimes it isn't.

Best wishes. keep us posted!!!

What a wonderful surprise benefit of bringing Fozzy home! Who is the beauty lounging in the pool?
Dear UP

I'd like to refer you to my previeous posts: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=41192 and the imbeded reference to 4355. Be prepared for surprises, but with patience most problems can be worked out. It took a little doing, but now both dogs are doing great.

George
Hey Valerie: The pup in the pool is my 9 month old Ben. Fozzy had never been in a pool, but he caught on quick. Now I need a bigger pool LOL
Adorable. I wonder if Chumley would like a pool. . .
Up.....Im so happy for you!!!! I cant wait to see the pictures!!! Panda and I would love to come visit your sheepie farm...she just asks not to have any geese....the ones by our house are mean and they chase her (and me 8O )...who knew that those things can actually run that fast!!! Nothing like seeing a sheepie and mommy (in flip flops) tearing down the park path......lol....
Hello UP~
How'd it go this weekend? Did you get to bring the baby home? Anxiously awaiting news. :D Did he get along well with Chelsea? :D
Darcy, The visual I got from you and Panda running from geese is too funny.

Actually, I have heard of people having "guard geese" for the very reason you mention, they are fast and formidable.

still laughing!
Hey Up! What are the haps?

I remember when I was looking for a second OES, I wanted a female and we looked at several, most of the dogs we looked at in the begining were far too high strung for Tyler who is a couch spud. Then we found Kiera, who is probably more of a spud than Tyler ever thought of being. I have found that Sheepies generally like sheepies best, besides their uprights!

I have never had much luck in getting Tyler to like other breeds, but I bring a sheepies into the picture and things are fine.

Hope to hear from you soon, we are all on edge waiting to hear how things went.
Hey everybody!

We are happy to annonce the addition of "Leo" to our household. We picked him up yesterday from foster care. He is pretty cute. He is a senior, a little scared, and has lots of new things to learn and figure out, but he is very sweet, has many kisses, and really needs a soft place to land. Poor little guy. He will be 13 in November.

Chelsea thinks we've lost our minds. But she is figuring him out! His is tiny - only 50lbs, so he's like a "min-sheepdog", the dynamic between the two is interesting, she is deferring to him because he is new and a senior, but she's twice his size so it's hard for her to not be in charge.

It was really fun taking the two of them on a walk this morning. He will only be with us a for a short time so I have guarded enthusiasm, but what a little sweetheart, he's had so much turmoil in his life these last few months, I hope he can find comfort hanging around with us!

We will post pics soon, and we will certainly bring him and Chelsea to Sheepiefest! We'll be the family with the giant and the midget sheepdogs!
I'm sure I will be posting behavioural and other questions in the coming weeks as we make our adjustments.

So watch for theose pics and keep us in your prayers!

Up.
Up, bless you for adopting a senior! They are indeed very special characters. I'm so glad that Leo worked out for you!
That's wonderful!! Thinking happy thoughts for all of you. . .
Up!

Congrats on the addition of Leo to your family! I'm so glad this senior boy has found you and your crew- hooray! Can't wait to see all the pics :)

Karen :)
Big Congratulations! Thank you for adopting this senior boy! Very happy for you all! :D
Congrats on your adoption of Leo, a senior! It has to be hard knowing that at his age, you'll have limited time with him, but with whatever time he has left, he'll know love and security in your home. What can be better?

Does he have any physical ailments?

Looking forward to the pics!

Chris
Oh Up, I'm so happy for you all! I can hardly wait to see pics of the tiny Leo! :D

Colleen and Gucci George=>Chelsea got her brother...still waiting on mine! :(
Congratulations! I know Leo has found a great new home.
Congrats on Leo. You are wonderful for adopting a senior!
I know he will live out the rest of his years happy and that's all that matters.
Elissa
Congrats on Leo!!!! Im sure he'll love his new home and his new sister! Nothing wrong with a "tiny" sheepie.....Panda is only 52 lbs....They still give the same amount of love as the "biggins".....lol...Im very happy for you....smiles all around!! :D
Congratulations on adopting Leo!

Remember, it's not amount of time it's quality so make the time that you do have wonderful! (I'm sure you will!)
Lucky Leo! Take care of this senior boy. I suggest much touching and talking to help his transition.
What a wonderful thing you've done for Leo! I'm sure you will bring him much deserved happiness for his remaining years.
whew-

Made it through our second night with Leo- he is a dear, loves his morning walks and sniffing around all the bushes and things.

Thanks for all of the support everybody- I need to figure out how to upload a pic now!

Don't worry - I'll keep everyone posted. I have few cute stories to tell- but no time right now, Leo doesn't do stairs so we have more time spent transporting him, and he and Chelsea dance around each other and I need to keep my eye on them all the time- sooo- we are very busy at our house! I will update later- going to the Bark Bark Club tomorrow. (groomer)

Thanks guys!
Up.
Congratulations, thats beautiful-sounds like Leo loves
his new home. He already has reservations at the
Bark Bark Club, I can picture him sitting in a large leather
chair reading the London Times , and Chelsea having
afternoon tea.

Our best to Leo and Chelsea !
Hi everybody!

Just a quick update to let you all know Leo is doing VERY well, we think he's a stitch! My son has been on vacation for two weeks with his dad and comes home Sunday- so we are praying all goes well with the introduction of a new member of the family, we are pretty attached to Leo at this point and of course pretty attached to our son, so they will just all have to get along.

Leo is WAY more gutsy than Chelsea, she's a big chicken, he on the other hand is a wise old thing who is afraid of nothing (even though he is so blind he can't see anything!) He knocked over the baby gate the other night because he was tired of being confined (we were painting the family room and trying to keep the canine paint brushes out of the room). He just simply walked over and butted the thing with his head until it fell down, then he walked over it and proceeded into the room. Chelsea was cowering in the backround with that "oooh somebody's in trouble" look on her face!

So we are having lots of fun, and I will say I never thought this would be the case but I'm really glad we adopted a senior, he wasn't neglegted or anything, in fact he is such a good pet, we think someone loved him very much and trained him well, it's just that that someone had to go to the nursing home. We really haven't had any behavioural issues (with him) and I credit that to the fact that someone cared for him a great deal. So if you are wondering about adopting/rescuing a senior- take it from me- it's a great idea! :)

That's all for now- THANK YOU everyone for the support, it made me feel good to know you were all routing for us as we were trying to get used to a new shag dog in the house. BTW, wouldn't trade the sea of fluff and tounge I come home to every night. If one is good - TWO is definitly better! We get lots of kisses.

I'm so glad everything is working out so well! I have the exact same experience with Chumley -- a much-loved, well-behaved senior girl whose prior owner moved to a retirement community after his wife died. She's the best! People at our dog park always comment on what a sweetheart she is. She is so good and so affectionate. I'm thrilled with my senior rescue. She's a honey of a dog.
Up that is great news! The story of him pushing over the gate made me laugh... :)
The baby gate made me laugh, sounds like he'd like to "help" :D
What a riot about the baby gate! If he's that determined, all I can say is - HIDE THE GARBAGE CANS!!!
cHRIS
aww what a great outcome.... im so glad things are working otu for you all. leo sounds like a sweetheart, and you guys are amazing for adopting a senior!
What a wonderful story, I would have adopted a senior also, jsut that our OES of 14 years died in November and the kids needed a yourger dog, but seniors are wonderful and deserve the best thats for people too!!
Up, I'm so happy for you all! Leo sounds like a great dog! He is so lucky to have found you!

Colleen and Gucci George=>looking forward to getting in trouble with my new brother Murphy!
