We have had Maggie for about 2 months, and she has been just wonderful...very sweet, loving, cuddly, etc. She has been attending obedience class for about 3 weeks now, and this class uses positive training methods i.e. food. This was great at first as Maggie is a little piggie and LOVES treats. BUT..twice now if we are in training mode and are rewarding with treats but then try to use verbal and petting praise in between, she has growled and shoved her nose in my hand. To me she's saying she's angry because all she wants is the treat. This really upset me. Any thoughts. |

Welcome Leigh Ann! And congrats on your new baby Maggie Mae!
My thoughts about the growling is to not give in to it AT ALL! I think I would turn around and completely ignore her if she does that (my GG hates being ignored! Ultimate punishment!) I don't have any other suggestions, but this is the best place to come for some! Everyone always has great advice! Looking forward to a PICTURE! hint hint Colleen and Gucci George=>welcome Maggie! |
I agree with colleen, I would ignore maggie mae...growl, no treats! I think I would use less treats to train and sporatically give her one...ie, flip what you have been doing..... |
By the way, Welcome!! |
Welcome to the forum!
And yes, I would agree with Colleen, if she growls, ignore her. If it doesn't stop soon, then say a firm no, then ignore her. Hopefully she will figure it out quickly! |
Thanks so much for your words of encouragement. It is so awesome to be able to talk to other OES owners. I love reading all the postings..it makes me feel like..ok, it's not just me (or Maggie) but typical doggie stuff.
I definately ignored her when it happened yesterday..maybe for too long, but like I said I was really upset. I have started hand feeding her again but have to admit I am hesitant to train with her again right now because of what happened...I guess I am afraid (not afraid of the dog...but of seeing the behavior again). Just a little backround info about me..my last dog (not an OES) we had to have put down because he started biting (not myself or husband but a dog, niece, and 2 friends) around age 5. This was just 1 year ago..I know I am carrying over those feelings and overanalyzing everything that poor Maggie Mae does. I am sooo scared that she will turn out like Sammy did. I thank you all for your postings and replies..they are a real comfort. |
Welcome, Leigh Ann and Maggie Mae! You have found the ultimate place for all things sheepie! You will learn a LOT!
Maggie Mae is only 5 months old and can still be trained easily. Absolutely do NOT let her dictate to you what you will give her, and when. Be firm, let her know you are the boss, and it will all work out. Yes, pictures are a big plus! Can't wait to see Maggie Mae! Chris |
It sounds like Maggie Mae has a bit of the same attitude her brother Bob has. I was secretly really worried about his behavior too. Don't laugh at me, but I've become obsessed with "The Dog Whisperer" show, and have been really working with Bob on the lead for the past few weeks. He knows I'm the boss now and has cut way down on the "back talk" and nipping. He's also going to doggie daycare once a week which also helps. I'm so glad you joined the forum. We'll have to get these 2 together one of these days!!

Welcome to the forum Your girl looks beautiful, is she a whitehead? |
She's beyond adorable!
Bogart has a little crush on her |
Beautiful little girl.
By all means, don't let the sheepdog be the boss in your house. They will love you more if they know you are in charge. She is testing you and will continue for the next 14 or so months. Get your back bone starched and ironed, you will have to be the boss, not that growly little bitch. I have Jack, a 2 year old rescue who was allowed to be the boss before. After 3 months he is still growling at the food dish, but otherwise, knows my commands and reacts now with pleasure, not back talk. Welcome aboard. |
Maggie says thanks for all of the compliments!
She is not a complete whitehead as she has some color of the fringes of her ears which is hard to notice unless you're up close. She thinks Bogart is one cute boy! |

Bob says hi to his sis, Maggie, as he is chewing on daddy's shoe right now because he's stuck upstairs!! Karen That's funny! Yes, I did. But I didn't know my addiction was contagious! Sadly, I think I've seen all the episodes now. But I've learned SO much. |
