What is a good age to increase a puppy's exercise?

I knew I had another question I was going to ask in my previous topic. At what age is it o.k. to step up on the amount of exercise we let the dogs have? Bob is almost 5 months, and I'm just wondering when it's o.k. to start taking him on long walks. We're just starting to get the hang of not pulling mommy everywhere when he's on his leash. (I've become obsessed with the Dog Whisperer and am convinced that he needs to go for some constructive walk time! ).

karen, we started taking panda on longer walks at about 5-6 months...now we dont go for super long walks even now, as its too hot, but we average about a half hour...we have a lot of practices of sitting at corners and leave its...still(she is 20 months now) she doesnt pull on the lead anymore, but when were walking her nickname has become sniffy..lol..I would say as long as he doenst look tired up it by 7 min or so.. and see how it goes...this time of year id do it early morning...thats the best...full of energy and a good night sleep..or after dinner...youll be able to tell if he is tired and trust me, nothing is worse than having to carry a really heavy puupy home!!
Thanks Darcy! That would be bad carrying him home. We still have to carry him down the stairs inside. I can't get him to go down those for the life of me! He just flattens out like a pancake at the top with his fluffy head flopped over the top step!
its amazing how flat they can get when they want. We showed Panada stairs at brians firestation a few months ago...it was commical...barking all the way up....and terrified barking all the way down..we made her do it several times to get the hang of it....lol....she gave me the look of "thank goodness we dont have these darn things at home..." Did you take bob for a longer walk yet?
That seems about the time I had to increase Max's walks as well. Going on 5 months he just seemed ready and wanted to go longer. Right now (he's 7 mos.) I walk him twice a day morning and after dinner (7:30 or so). I have different routes I take so he gets to see new scenes. My favorite walk is to a wooded park just in back of our neighborhood, there are different trails to take and it's just like being lost in the woods, I've noticed Max does much better when he's on a trail because there are so many different sounds and smells, and critters too  When he's out of the woods, he takes a drink out of the fountain, (people always laugh at that) and we head home. This usually takes 30 min. and Max usually ends up laying on the sidewalk for a bit on the way home. I just let him have a breather and then make him finish the walk home.
