Same cough he gets when he is trying to cough one up after playing with Harley (My Shepherd) The cough was on and off all night and it seemed like he was trying to get something out of his throat. I tried to give him water and he refused it. He was at my SIL's Kennel but that was over a week ago. Years ago I brought home a dog from a shelter who had Kennel Cough. The very next day I returned her because I knew she had it. My Boxer got it within two days. So I am thinking it wouldn't be that, because it's been over a week now. Any suggestions...comments. |

It shouldn't be kennel cough if Peanut's vaccinated for Bordatella. Even if it is kennel cough it's no big deal. A quick trip to the vet, 2 pills a day for a week and they're good as new. I'm not saying it's a good thing but it's not devastating either and is easily rectified. |
Goodness, Elissa, I can't think of a thing I know that would help you. But, I am so sorry for Peanut! I hope some others have advise that will help you. |
Elissa, I have a doggie medical book and it says that coughing is not a normal dog reaction. If it persists more than 24 hours the dog should be seen by a vet. Panda, a few months back was coughing badly, and I too thought she had something caught in her throat....I took her to the vet and lo and behold...kennel cough..... |
Has anyone tried the hairball goo for cats on their dogs? (Petromalt). |
Peanut hasn't had his bordatella vaccine in a while due to his seizures I have avoided all vaccines except Rabies for him.
I do have Doggie Antibiotics and I remember when Roxie my Boxer had it I gave her my son's left over antibiotics and that worked. So if he has it I will give the other two antibitoics just in cause. I am not sure of the vaccines that Pepsi had before I got him. I updated his Rabies and Distemper combo when I got him but not bordatella. And for Harley I don't know when the last one was... I know it has been longer than a year. Valerie, I think I gave the hairball stuff to my first poodle after he ate a chunk of my cats fur.. ALSO: I did happen to use Pinesol last night...undiluted!!! We took out our old over and there was just really nasty stuff on the floor. I am wondering if the fumes would have this effect on him. I know you are supposed to use it in a well ventilated area and well our kitchen in not well ventilated Elissa |
I would be very careful about using old antibiotics that were not prescribed for your specific dog and its current condition. (1) They expire. (2) The dosage could be wrong. And (3) if you are treating the wrong ailment, you can end up with a more ferocious infection than if you had just left it alone. Antibiotics are serious business. At least I hope you check with the vet before doing so. |
Hi Valerie,
This was a suggestion by my niece who is in school to become a Vet. Since I already have what they would prescribe I would give that to the other two. The prescription is pretty recent for a problem Harley had with a tooth...(LONG STORY!!!) If Peanut does have it. Of course Peanut would need his own prescription because he is only 8 lbs. Though once he had some water this morning the coughing has diminished quite a bit. Then I realized that I was coughing too... So I probably irritated our lungs from the Pinesol. Oops... And Peanut being so small probably got the worst of it. I will give it 24 hrs to see if it stops before I do anything. Elissa |
A couple of points to make, the bordatella vaccine is not very effective even when given, and as with all vaccines, can sometimes cause more harm than good.
I would take him into the vet, as it could very well be kennel cough, and Pepsi may simply have a stronger immune system and not have it, yet. Coughing can also be signs of heart problems, like congestive heart failure in early stages, or even heartworms. Coughing is also a common symptom of plain old roundworms. Pretty much all dogs carry the eggs of roundworm within the tissues of their digestive system. They can lay dormant for months, even years, and when the dog goes through hormonal changes, or stress, or an illness, it gives the eggs an opportunity to hatch. The larvae end up in the lungs which are coughed up, tickling the throat as they crawl up the windpipe, and as they are coughed out of the windpipe they are swallowed, and mature in the stomach and intestines therefore starting the cycle all over again. You wouldn't necessarily find any sign of it in the dogs feces at that stage. It could be an irritated throat from the fumes, or wheezing in the lungs.... any number of things, some serious some not. Good luck! I hope Peanut feels better soon. |
Thanks Stacey,
I just talked to my niece and she said none of the dogs at the kennel had kennel cough, but of course that means nothing. She did say that she had asked her Mother if she could use Pinesol to clean the kennel instead of bleach and was told that Pinesol is harmful to dogs so it could very well be a reaction to that. Especially since it's been over a week since he's been home from the kennel and kennel cough usually shows up in a couple of days. Also his cough has lessened quite a bit since this morning, so I will see how he does for the rest of today and tonight. If he's not any better tomorrow I will bring him to the vet. In the meanwhile....My SIL is supposed to call me back when she wakes up to tell me about Pinesol and Dogs. I will post on that when I get the info Elissa |
