I ahve been reading loads of posts on all sorts of stuff here tonight! Mega informative site, so whoever runs it, well done. Whats especially good about it, you're all sheep dog owners, so its real live experience! Tonight, i have learnt i must be firmer with the vet,.... I must be firmer with Monty...... the vet must be firmer with Monty...... And i have to be firmer with the kids!, lol And puppy classes are an absolute must! I will be booking them first thing tommorow. The tricky thing is going to be teaching all these things to hubby and the kids. Its not Monty that needs training , Its us!, lol. Many thanks again, Mo x (still not worked out how to put 'Monty' 's name next to his picture, lol) oh, and, ... how often is it wise to bath him, (hes only 3 months)....but all his turf digging is dirty work!, lol |

For stinky and dirty puppies I would say you could bathe them 2 x's a month. I wash Panda once a month, and I work it in with giving her heartworm meds, advantics meds and shaving.... You definately need to brush more than bathe...well, I dont know, if mo is digging to china....lol...I say stinky puppy...bath time!! |
Thanks !!
We have had to bath him a few times already, and collegues say we should only bath him once every 6 months!(phew smellyy ! ) He does seem to scratch a lot though, we wondered if he had dry skin,... but have decided to take him to the vet anyway for a general check over again. (not got fleas, we have frontlined him twice to be sure) I have been reading another thread where someone mentioned mange, it scared the life out of me! How would I know if Monty had that? He had a nasty ear infection a few days after we fetched him, and had to ahve some antibiotics, the vet was very good, .... gave him a good check over and said he was fine condition etc. (and gonna be one BIGGG DOGGIE!) I am sorry if i have digressed from the subject matter of this post,... i am just pleased to find someone to share my questions and worries with. Is there a "newbie" board? where I can get all this off my chest? Again, Many thanks, Mo x (and I LOVE the piccie of your dog and you) |
Some dogs are really sensitive and have allergies. If he is scratching alot, I would ask the vet about that...he may have an allergy to the food...you just dont know....If Mo had the mange, Im sure your vet would have informed you already...take it easy ....but do check with him...more than likely, its an allergy.
I think you should say HI to everyone under the introductions heading. And remember, pictures are a must...and as often as possible. |
If he's itchy and being bathed reularly (if he smells, he needs a bath) you should try an oatmeal shampoo. Some shampoos are very drying so he may simply be itching because his skin is dry from both the dirt and then the shampoo. There are many different brands out there, just look for one that says it's specifically for itchy skin.
If that doesn't help or he has hot spots or spots where he is losing fur, then it is time to have him checked for mange and possibly allergies. |
Good point Maxmm. Bailey had dry skin when he was young and we went to the oatmeal shampoo, it's great. The other thing that made a big difference was changing his food. When we switched from Purina to Iams the dry skin went away.
Mo, you don't need a newbie board... we all love to talk about our sheepies so feel free to ask all the questions you want! I still consider myself a newbie and ask tons of questions. Sue |
Mo.
Make sure you get a gentle shampoo just for puppies and don't get one with flea treatment in if you have used frontline on him. |
Thats brilliant advice!
Oatmeal it is ! And, he is on proplan plus, so sounds like a change might be a good thing to try. And, (Mo hangs her head in shame) , i have been bathing him in shampoo with flea repelant/killer in too, .... over paranoid about fleas..... so maybe I have made it worse. (Ohh, I feel sooo bad!) Another thing I am unsure about (I feel absolutely useless now!)...under his chin is constantly dirty, even when we bath him, its very difficult to get him clean there, he loves water, but is it safe to shampoo that close to his mouth, it would be virtually impossible not to get it IN his mouth, he is soo active. Thanks again, Mo x |
Mo, There is really nothing that you can do to keep their beard clean. Does it look brown? Well, thats normal sheepie slobber. I used to feel the same as you and clip it off, but then she was getting a little hairless on her chin ...so now I just live with brown chin...it has to do with their salvia. You can use a mixture of peroxide and baking soda. mix a paste rub it on and let it dry. rub it off and it will be a little whiter, but not completely gone. If you keep her water bowl fresh that seems to help too. It seem the summer is worse than the winter...but Panda drools A LOT in the summer. |
Yes, its brown,.... and i dont mind really, Monty is our pet and we dont intend to show him, it just looks dirty, lol
He is such a slobberer too , . we had some really hot weather a couple of weeks ago, and it was really hard to get him to drink at all, but now its cooled down, he seems to making up for it. We change his water very regularly (we are both around all day) , but he is soaking wet all round his chin for ages after, and thats when he really jus has to give you that nuzzle, ugh! lol ! How did we live without him? Mo |
For the chin, we keep a hand towel laying around. As soon as they are done drinking they get squeeze dried. Don't rub or it will knot up like crazy! Keeping it as dry as possible has helped with the mess and the smell. |
A hand towel for your 3 dogs? Heck we keep a beach towel just for Clyde. |
Should say one hand towel per dog per room. |
Good advice from everyone so I thought I would add just a bit: Henry gets a partial bath regularly about once every 1-2 weeks. I don't do his whole body which doesn't always need it but I do wash his face, legs, and bottom whenever they gross me out. When he has had tummy problems, I have done his bottom 2-3 time a day. |
