We got our OES male puppy when he was 8 weeks old from a great breeder. Once we brought him home, we noticed he was resource guarding. We were worried because we have two small children and he would growl and snap if we tried to take away food/toys he didn't want us to. We got a trainer to come in and we talked to our vet. Our puppy is also going to puppy school each week. Our trainer uses a method similar to the Monks of Newskete, which does require shakedowns and pinning. Our pup is now 15 weeks old and his behavior is only getting worse. He bit my husband today while he was correcting his behavior after he jumped on our son and grabbed/bit his hair/head while our son was sledding. He only seems to become more aggressive with time. We make him work for every meal and every treat--sit, food. stay, food. down, food. He can be so sweet and lovable, however I have serious concerns about when he "switches" and becomes aggressive. Would it be reasonable for our breeder to take the puppy back (either for a new pup or a refund)? The breeder is in the loop about this behavior but they've never encountered this before and they are not yet open to these options. They are willing to take the pup for a weekend to see if that might change his behavior. I am concerned this might set him back a bit. Would love other people's opinions on this as it's not clear to me what we should do at this point. Thank you. |
