I am in the process of getting quotes to build a sheepie room onto my house. There is a perfect 10x16 grassy area between my back deck and the beginning of the fenced portion of the yard. It will primarily serve as a bathing/grooming area. There will be heat/air so we can groom out there all year long. There will be a doggie door so they can come inside or go out & play at their leisure during the day. I'm thinking of putting a toddler bed on one side for them. My question is, for those of you who have similar set ups, what sort of things do you have in your sheepie room? I have picked out a grooming table. I want to put up shelves for my supplies. I'm thinking of a stainless steal table, of some sort, with a drain hole, to bath them on. That way I won't have to kneel down into a tub. I have no experience with this type of thing, other than in horse barns. Any ideas or suggestions for things to include? or materials I should or should not use? All help appreciated! |

What a great idea! Best wishes with the sheepie room
design plan! I'm sure everyone here will give you some great ideas and suggestions!! There is a college in our area that offers a grooming certificate course, let me know and I can send you the info. The instructors there many have some ideas on a home grooming area too! Good luck!!! |
Sounds like a great idea!
On the www.dog.com website they have a thing called a Booster Bath (under Bath Supplies) that you might want to check out. It's on sale for $178, although once you see the picture you might be able to put together something like it on your own. |
Thanks, Zahra. Good idea to ask the groomer!
That's a very cool tub, Sue. Thanks for the link. I do want something similar to that and that's not a bad price. |
Check around before going with the booster bath. I saw a pro style sink that was just a pinch more expensive than a booster bath.......KVvet or PetEdge. Then I'd have the steps going up into the tub. If you could swing a pro type spray system instead of the usual kitchen faucet, do it.....the type with the overhead spray. Oh where's Darcy when we need her??!! See if there's a special hair strainer for the sink......we know dog hair is a bummer in the pipes. Shelves for shampoo so it can be dispensed easily with one hand.
Then you need a blower to blow off of the water......force dryer. That really speeds the drying process. I'm not fond of dryer boxes. I'd go with a stand dryer......if you can swing a force blower and a separate stand dryer. Now of course your grooming table is adjustable?? How about a stackable washer/dryer for all the towels? They don't take up much room. I don't know if the clippers that have the motor separate is a good idea. My guys would appreciate not having the noise so close to their brains. Also maybe the run a bit cooler? I don't know. I've dreamed of adding a grooming area to my laundry room, but it is just a dream. |
Thanks SheepieBoss.....but I have no idea about specialty fixtures...I can help with the layout of cabinets and such, but when it comes to faucets. I would go to a good plumbing supply store....if you need help with the design ..pm me. |
All good ideas SheepieBoss - thanks!
I definitely want an overhead sprayer for the bathing area. And shelves - lots of shelves. My dad was designing something like what you're talking about, with steps, while I was on the phone with him yesterday. He's going to be doing the plumbing. Where do I shop for the dryers? PetEdge? The washer & dryer are in the laundry room right next to this one, so I think I'll be okay. |
Yep, PetEdge is one such location. I'm sure there are others. Hope your father sees the steps, no use reinventing the wheel.
One other thought, a friend was just remarking how hot grooming is in the summer.......and they live in a cooler location. All the hot water and hair dryers..........so don't skimp on air conditioning and dehumidifying. The load will be greater than the usual Btu for that size room. sheepboss |

I tried that "Clipper Cool" stuff, sprayed it on and clippers got hotter.? Never found out what the problem was. The groomer's I spoke with all said they used two sets of clippers. When one got hot, they switched. |
The breeder that we got Mojo from has a wonderful setup. She has a walk out basement that is all for her "kids". One area is like a living room where people can come and spend time with the puppies to decide who is right for them. The other area is for grooming. It has a raised tub with a hand held shower. It lools like an inexpensive tub and surround that you could get at any hardware store. There is also a grooming table and cabinets for storage.
Will try to post pics Good luck with your project. |
I haven't bought clippers yet. I've got a shopping cart full of stuff at PetEdge, though!
I'd like to see pictures of any similar setups. Especially the tubs with steps. I'll see if I can find some to show my father, so he'll know what I want. Good point about the dehumidifier - especially here in the southeast. Yikes! It's the worst summer in 12 years for heat/humidity. |
I would say a walk in shower. You can have the fixtures mounted as low as you want them, and add a detachable sprayer. You could also mount a supply shelf for shampoo, etc, right in the shower. Pull out bins for food would save some room, these could go in a lower cabinet. |
There's something to be said for a walk in shower........big one. Resale will be better. However, my days of bending over a dog or two to scrub are about over. Everything is now done with dog raised. But then again, Jack would have a nice big "bomb shelter" when the thunder comes. Right now he hangs out of our shower.......... |
I did it. Managed to get pictures on. Thay are in the picture section under raised tub. There aren't steps but hope it gives you some ideas. |
I like the big shower idea. Maybe I can modify it and use the fiberglass portion to line the walls but still use the raised tub.
Thanks for the pictures A Yager! That's a great set-up they've got there. I guess I need to do some shopping. The contractor wants me to make up my mind on materials so he can get the quote finished. Thanks for all the suggestions! This is very helpful!! |
