I’m new to boards and new to finding a breeder for an old English sheepdog! My husband and I are looking for an OES breeder and can’t seem to find luck! Does anyone have any suggestions?! We live in PA but are open to anywhere in the US THANKS!! |

Look at the breed info at AKC and make sure an OES is the right breed for you. Today's sheepdogs are house dogs and mostly laid-back couch potatoes, but have retained some of the instincts of a herding breed and need to be part of a family. I know of no breeders in your area but you might get a recommendation on one here. Otherwise, check out the AKC web site to see if any breeders are listed in your area. Can I also suggest: 1) Do not patronize any internet OES breeders or others who advertise widely who say they can ship dogs anywhere in the country. They are undoubtedly puppy mills. No legitimate breeder would sell a dog to someone they hadn't met and had no knowledge of what kind of home they were going to. 2) Consider seriously if you really want a puppy with all of the training and accidents that entails. Instead, I strongly suggest you consider a rescued sheepdog. I have had 13 sheepies over many years and all but three were rescues and ALL of those made wonderful companions who were, if anything, more grateful and became more attached to me because I gave them love and a good home after many of them had never known that. Most of my rescued dogs were 1 to 1-1/2 years old when I got them with a few a bit older who still lived for a number of additional years with me. I think the prevalence of year-old dogs is a function of the fact that some people thought a sheepdog puppy looked cuddly and playful but when they became 80-100 lbs and their coat had begun to mat after their first year, they realized it was not the right breed for them. Sheepdogs take care and although they are great family pets and spectacular in full coat if it is maintained, I have found that clipping them down a few times a year is much easier to live with. I have gotten a few sheepdogs from the local OES Rescue group where I live (I am sure there is one in the part of the country where you live). You should try there first. Others came from public shelters, ads in the paper and Craig's list, and by word of mouth. But the breed is increasingly rare and it may take time to find the right dog for you. |
Use this link: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ferral.php Not playing favorites, but there are a couple good breeders that immediately come to mind: - Haystac OES: Madeline Erickson; Churchville, NY 14428; 585-293-2967; waynenik@aol.com; Haystacs have consistently done well in confirmation trials. A few members of this board have Haystacs. I've met a few of them and they are great. Madeline is near Rochester, NY - Blueshire OES: Amber Travis-Posthumus; Canfield, Ontario, Canada; 905-772-0855; blueshire@outlook.com; http://www.blueshireoes.net/ ; https://www.facebook.com/Blueshire-Regd ... =758405454 (I have personally met MANY Blueshire pups and they are ALL WONDERFUL. MANY members here have Blueshires. And it's easy to move a pup across the U.S.-Canadian border.) Amber is a little west of Niagara falls on the Canadian side |
