Can you leave him in one room where he can't reach anything? Push all items right to the back of the surface, or keep it clear. We found that Sprocket went through a phase of climbing on to the chair to get on to the table so we had to make sure we pushed the chairs right under the table or took them away when no one could keep an eye on him. Try to make sure he can't get in to trouble before it can happen. A good run around or play before he is left so he sleeps for a while is also a good idea. Good luck, it should only be for a while until he finds something else to do. You could give him a cardboard box with his toys in to play with. xx Allyson xx |
That's pretty typical behavior for a 5 month old dog. Take him for a walk and tire him out before you leave is all I can suggest. He'll out grow it–at least the chewing– although my current dog has been a counter surfer and trash can diver for all of his 12 years so we have just gotten used to taking everything off the counters and putting the trash can out of reach every time we leave. I think it is his game. He watches us drive off and in less than a minute he's at it. I know because if I forget something and have to go back for it immediately, I find him nosing around on the counter already. |
Just want to jump in and wish you good luck and abundant patience... |
Oliver is just six months and now tall enough to get into everything including counter surfing. In the last two days it’s been a parade of shoes, Mail, sponges, tea towels, you name it, he steals it. Our girl Bailey was a bread thief until she was too old to jump up. Her nick name was the muffin monster. She’d steal them and hide them around the house - under pillows, in book cases. She was one of the smartest sheepish we ever had. Miss her. Hopefully the fascination with all thing “stealable”will fade, but who know. |
Relax, you have another 13 months of this young man behavior. They will test you over and over again. You thought child proofing your house was tough, HA! So how many waste baskets has he dove into? Eat the couch? Yep, could happen. Lost a whole area rug to a young male St. Bernard.........it came back, front and end the next day or two. |
Sprocket has to have a shoe to greet you or anyone with-he runs round and round till finds one so easier to have one by both doors for him. He doesn't harm them at all. xx |

Something else you could try is putting a bunch of empty cans on the counter. When he goes for the counter, the noise of the cans hitting the floor will (should ) startle him. |

I would place baking sheets on the edge of the counter. Filled with vinegar and water. Works for counter cats too. Paws flip the pan, pan falls, and wets the dog. Worked for my rott lab mix, having a pan fall on you and getting soaked is nothing compared to get bills to remove stomach obstructions. My friend lined her counters with mouse traps. Worked for her! I tried the can thing before, dog tried to eat the Can! So be careful! |
Vinegar... so it's stinky or to prevent licking? |
I actually use vinager and water to deodorize, a little splash in the water will deter noses from wanting to sniff the counter, and if it does fall down, they won't like the smell on them. I find it great for cleaning smelly paws, a little dip and swish gets that nacho feet smell away. |
Fritos! There's a thread about "My dog's feet smell like Fritos" (or similar) on here. Haha |
They really do smell like Fritos........and could be why Miss I'll Eat Anything licks her feet. I try to blame allergies, but I think it's a Frito fixation As for vinegar, I doubt this will this work for dogs that love dill pickles? I refer to the above dog. |
