We have sandflies, horseflies and 500 species of mosquito's..for me, a shave would be easier to get the bugs off, does the coat help against bugs? We don't have fleas or ticks up here, just blood sucking you know what's! |

Puppy cut here |
Better to shave or cut down than having lots of difficulties. I love them with full coat however I do think "bobcut" (about 4 cm fur) is very cute! I shaved both my dogs once because they got mites, no brushwork for six months.....lovely |
I have mine both ways. You may not know what you prefer until you have done it. The puppy coat is the hardest to clip down for me because I love that coat the most, but for ease and comfort puppy cut works best for me in warm weather. By the time it gets really cold they have enough fur to keep warm. I usually shave in early spring. My dogs don't stay out long in the heat, but mine are more comfortable without the full coat in summer - I don't care what anyone says. I love them short and long - probably about equally. It's a nice change either way Shellie |
Thanks!! Sorry would have answered sooner, but had some wicked thunder storms out here! |
hi, I have found over the course of 30 years and four OES that puppy cut works for us. I have lived in cold climates and semi- tropical ones. I am now in the Pacific Northwest on Vancouver Island. My puppy Barnaby has had his first "haircut" and is happy and cool. We stay inside in hot weather as I can't tolerate it. My OES were comfortable with their haircuts and it made baths and grooming easier! I have never been involved in showing so this colours my perspective! |
Good to know!! We don't have a groomer up here, so will def me a learning process! We get down to about 9c here, so still debating. Some summers are cold, some warm. Any suggestions on a good electric shaver? |
Oster Golden A5 (with or without turbo) is the old standby, but people really love some others. |
I second the oster A5! I have had mine from my first OES 17 years ago and I love it. Plus it is easy to fix and get parts for. I have dropped mine so many times, broken the plastic housing, bent parts and just recently replaced the worn out switch. Great clipper. You can find some pretty good deals but it can be in the expensive side. However, the cheaper ones you will have to replace several times over the years, so in the end worth the cost. Shellie |
I forget... The mast to.e I looked at this and ton of people liked the... Andes or Wahl? I forget which. Doesn't get as hot or something. I've had mine 25 years of very light duty. Shaved my own beard off when it got too long for a razor several times! Haha |
So the Oster A5 is a must! I will def add that to my list once we have a confirmed puppy!! Thanks any other grooming hints and must do's are welcomed!! |
Read this thread and the three links in the second post of mine viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12882 |
Thanks Ron will have to do some youtubing when I get a chance to see how it's done! Sure could use a dog right now! Been having a polar bear wandering the bushes here for a week! And 2 black bears fishing down the road a few km away! |
