It started on Friday evening. I gave him his first shot of Adequan. Within an hour or so, he seemed wobblier and more uncoordinated than normal. I figured it was just a mild reaction to the shot. The next morning, I dropped him at the groomers for a bath and cut. She called me about an hour and a half later asking me to pick him up. He had 3 rounds of explosive diarrhea. They had to bathe him 3 times. While I was checking out, it looked like he was going to have another round, so I ran him outside and he went all over their driveway. Got him home, put him out in the backyard, he wandered around a bit and decided he wanted to come back in. He made it halfway up the 5 stairs and his back end gave out. He went again right there. I got him up to the landing, cleaned him up, and brought him inside. He sat down and was panting very heavily. Gave him some water and he drank. He decided he didn't want anymore water, got up, and attempted to walk over his water bowl. His paw landed on his bowl, spilling the water, he lost his balance and fell to the floor. He laid there for a while in the water. I got nervous, so I scooped him up and brought him to the ER. They took some blood and ran some basic tests. All were within the normal ranges. The ER vet said it's possible the Adequan caused the diarrhea as it is listed as a potential side effect. She's not so sure about the wobbliness and incoordination. She said it might me neurological. She suggested X-rays and a brain MRI. I declined. He's 13 and almost 2 months. What would we do if we found something? So they gave me metronidazole for the diarrhea and told me to withhold his trilostane (Cushing's med) and galiprant (arthritis med) for a few days. His wobbliness and incoordination seems to be a little better today, but I can definitely see that he's still having difficulties, especially with stairs, slippery floors, and transitions (floor to carpet). I these symptoms are foreshadowing worse things coming in the near future. I don't have any experience or really anything to base this on, but I'm guessing he doesn't have much time left. I'm guessing maybe a month or two? Nobody's told me that; that's just me guessing based on the changes I've seen over the last few months. So now I'm really trying to split my time and attention between the 2 dogs. It really sucks. |

I am so sorry, Mark. When it rains, it pours. Hoping that you have good quality time with your boys...... Laurie |
Good lord. :=( |
Think it is a case of sitting on the floor cuddling them both!! A "runny rear end" is so nasty for them. Amazing the bad effects "good drugs" have. So sorry you are having a bad time of it all at the moment-dogs, who would have them!!---ME.xx |
Poor Brick, hope you can have a lot of qualitytime with them both. |
I am so sorry to hear this. Poor baby. I am sure you are feeling helpless. You have our best wishes. |
