Help.....skunk!!!

Last night my Abby ran right into the path of a skunk. I managed to clean around her eyes but she and the whole house are really bad. I have seen the remedy using hydrog. peroxide. baking soda and dishwashing liquid. Can anyone advise if this is the best for me to use? Obviously at 11 p.m. I didn't leave her outside so nobody slept very well. Now it's time to deal with this as the stores are open. Please, any advice is welcome. :(

try putting tomato juice on her and let it sit for a few minutes, then wash it out
I have heard it doesn't really do the job. Have you actually had to use it? Also, what about the house....? Thanks
Hi Josie,
Sorry to hear about your dogs encounter
with a skunk

Try Nature's Miracle Skunk Remover formula-
You can get it at Petco, and pet stores.
I believe it is for carpets, fabrics etc. as well.

I have not used this product personally, but have
used many of the other products they have and
they work well....

Good luck and keep us posted!
I wouldn't use hydrogen peroxide over the whole dog, it will bleach her, and more importantly, if she gets too much in her mouth it is toxic.
I would use tomato juice, a few cans of it, poured all over her, rub it in, let it sit, and then wash it out. It does work, we had to use it on my golden retriever Sam, it took a couple of times but it worked.
Also, the natures remedy skunk stuff at pet stores I've heard works well, but I've never tried it.
We have a family of skunks in our yard that we are hoping to trap and relocate soon, not looking forward to the relocating part! 8O
I'm not sure about OES but be prepared for a pink dog for the next few months on the white parts. Years ago we had a white dog that got sprayed and we juiced him and the poor guy looked like a cartoon for months! I have heard good things about the Nature's Miracle stuff though.
Uh What if my dog just smells of dog?
Its been a week since her last bath and i don't want to overdo it....
Tips?
Thankfully she's relatively short haired at the moment.

In between grooming, if needed we use the Baby Powder
Cologne by tropiclean. It is subtle and smells great !

Not sure if its available in your area, but here's
their web site

If not, I'm sure there are similar products available.
We chose this product because it has natural ingredients
and is favored by our groomer.........
Abby is doing pretty well. I took the chance, after talking with someone who had the experience, and used the peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing liquid. I cannot believe it but that stuff really neutralized the skunk immediately. Her gray is gray and the white is really white. Not a bad side effect. I only wish I had some on hand the night before. Because I couldn't treat it with anything right away, the smell entered the house with Abby. I certainly wasn't going to leave her out. Now I am battling with the smell that is lingering. I did use the Nature's Miracle skunk odor remover and have sprayed most surfaces she may have touched. In the heat of summer, boy does skunk smell stay around!!

Thanks for asking about her. She's getting hugs like always and we make lots of noise at the front door before we go out together. No more skunks for me. My advice for everyone is to keep the solution on hand so if it ever happens you won't be stuck. Skunks come out very late at night when the stores are closed.
Yeah Abby!

Good news !!!

Glad things are getting better!
I realize that the problem is solved now - but I am a little slow in
catching up with this post!
When I was 8 months pregnant, our Samoyed got sprayed by a skunk.
I mean really soaked - and when I called her in she was running
full tilt so I didn't know she was wet with it! What a nightmare! I tried
the tomato juice, but it really didn't help me all that much - plus on an
all white coat it looked horrible.
I finally used up a whole bottle of the citrus flea shampoo- I can't
recall the name- flea flee or something like that I think. It had a very
strong citrus scent- supposed to help keep the bugs and fleas away-
but that worked better than anything else I tried. After a coulple
scrubs and rinses she smelled great. Now the rest of the house...well
I did throw some of the shampoo in with the washable rugs, but the
house smelled like skunk every time it got humid inside for a very long
time!

Lucky for me I really like the smell of skunks! At 8 months pregnant my
sense of smell was really magnified, that could have been really ugly!

You should try the Febreeze Air Effects inside the house. It works well for odor neutralizing and has a nice sent for any leftover cover up. Should help while you are scrubbing the smell out of everything.
Anything's got to be better than what you have now. Ewwwwww
This whole thread has a feeling of deju vu to me. My assistant's dog got sprayed about 2 weeks ago and ran through her house and literally infected everything with the stench. She came in to my office and I sniffed the air. Before I could say anything, she freaked out. She screamed, "I know I stink, there's nothing I can do. I tried everything, everything stinks!" She ran back to her work area and wrapped herself in a big sweater that she had stashed at work, away from the incident at home. She wasn't very social for a few days and I'll never sniff anyone again...;)
Hello,

My dog also just got skunked - is there any difference between Nature's Miracle Skunk and regular Nature's Miracle? The Petco people couldn't tell me, and the ingredients read exactly the same, but it just says 'natural enzymes' . I tried to contact the company to no avail.

the reason is that I have a large quantity of regular Nature's Miracle and but not Nature's Miracle for Skunk. I hope I am not harming my dog by applying it directly to his fur as if it were the skunk bottle.....

any advice?
First off I know this is and old post but tomato juice is an old wives tale. It does not work. Skunk spray is an enzyme and it needs to be broken down. What happens with tomato juice is you become so used to the skunk smell you just dont smell it anymore, but other people do. Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and detergent works and it does not bleach the fur on black dogs. This I know for a fact, we had a GSD that was mainly black. She loved to chase anything and everythign that would come into the yard. Once one of the neighbor cats killed a skunk. Shasta found such skunk and rolled in it. YUCK. We buried the skunk and I went out and bought the expensive anti skunk stuff at petco. While I was gone hubby read about the peroxide mix on the internet and had her washed and smelling good by the time I got home with the 10.00 stuff. Her fur did not bleach at ALL. Long story short she found where the skunk was buried, dug it up and carried through the yard both her and Cheyenne rolled in the dead skunk so now we had two dogs to wash both being GSD's with black fur. Shasta was almost all black. we washed them both AGAIN with the mixture and not one bleached dog and the skunk smell was gone. IF you google in on the net you will see that agricultural departments recomment it.
Josie, I have used that recipe twice and it works great!! No scent whatsoever on my dogs. :D
