Deafness due to Otomax/Gentamicin (Ototoxicity)

Boy, this forum is quiet. Has everyone gone to Facebook? I'm not a Facebook person, nor do I tweet, twit, text, or anything of the like.

Our 11.5 year old OES developed bilateral deafness four days into treatment for a significant bacterial infection with Otomax. Our Veterinarian said that the deafness could be transient or permanent, that time will tell (up to six weeks), and that the cause of the deafness could have been the Otomax, as this (Ototoxicity) is a known side effect of Otomax/Gentamicin, or the bacterial infection. She is more inclined to think the Otomax, as our dog does not have a long history of ear infections.

Has anyone else had a dog that experienced this? Outcomes? What did you do?

I have done an extensive search of the Veterinary (peer reviewed) literature, and found (only) one credible contribution:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3490132/

Of interest, the authors say (remember, only one paper): " Supplementation of various antioxidants has been demonstrated to attenuate ototoxicity induced by aminoglycosides and, to some extent, cisplatin. Guidelines for palliative treatment of cats and dogs is not yet available."

It seems that these two products fit that bill, which we are going to try, as we pray for a return of our dog's hearing:

Thank you.

I'm sorry that you guys are going through this. :(
So sorry to hear about this! I am not familiar with Otomax, or any of the issues surrounding it, but Oscar used to have frequent ear issues (bacterial and fungal) as a result of an autoimmune disorder.

My vet prescribed Animax (which does not contain gentamicin), which worked beautifully, in case you were looking for a substitute for the Otomax.

One huge caveat - Oscar was born deaf, so I did not look into that particular side effect for Animax.

I hope your pup regains hearing. :crossed:

I know it's been a few years, but what was the outcome for yor.dog? Did your dog ever regain hearing? If so, how long did it take? Mine just lost her hearing a few days ago, and I'm a mess. I had no idea of the dangers of Gentamicin. Looking for all the insight I can. Thanks.

Wow, many years have passed since my post, and the dog who I described is now a priceless memory.

I wish your dog a favorable outcome. I remember our Veterinarian telling us that a fair number of dogs who develop hearing loss/deafness due to Gentamicin, regain their hearing. Unfortunately, our dog had no such luck. Like you, I was heartbroken by our dog's loss of hearing/deafness. I remember, to this day, exactly where our dog was laying on the floor, when we discovered his new deafness, and, I remember talking to him, and getting no response from him.

Never again will we treat our dogs with Otomax/Gentamicin, particularly, a senior dog.
