She suggested some prescription foods mixed with some enticements to get Brick eating. She will be doing the calculations to determine which food and what enticements and how much of each to get a balanced meal. Body condition is ranked from 1 - 9, 1 being emaciated, 9 being obese. She ranked Brick an optimistic 2. She'd like to see him gain 10 lbs. We have a lot of work to do. One thing she said took me by surprise. She said if we can't put weight on him, we should consider a feeding tube. My question is, would any of you guys put an elderly/geriatric dog thru the process of a feeding tube? |

Hi Mark. With all of Oscar's tummy troubles, we certainly know the value of enticements! (It's tough to find things that will get them to eat without causing pancreatitis. Hopefully, the enticements will do the trick.) As far as a feeding tube? Here are the factors I would have considered with Oscar. Where are we in his stage of life? If I do this, what other things will get thrown out of balance? Will this improve his quality of life? If I had this recommendation from one of Oscar's specialists, I would have talked to my regular vets about it. They had cared for Oscar overall, and could give me a well-rounded perspective on what treatments were more sensible, and what treatments were "hail Mary" passes. Laurie |
