I have taught my dog to 'SPEAK!"....and then I have taught...'NO SPEAK"...Experts suggest to teach a behavior so you can quell an unwanted one. It has worked for me in the past. Another suggestion is to sign up for an obedience class and have the instructor work with you on how to redirect the barking...and finally~~an animal behaviorist would be something I would try since they deal with difficult behaviors... I am sure there will be many others to suggest other remedies.... Good Luck and please keep us posted~~~ |
We used to shut Sprocket in a different room when he barked and let him out the second he stopped, back in when started etc-about half an hour later he realised that if he wanted to be with me he had to be quiet. Started off doing that when he barked in the garden for no reason (that we could see/hear)xx |
Thanks, for the suggestions |
I'm a bit late but when Tiggy decided that she needed to bark like crazy while she was waiting her turn in the sheep herding pen I taught her that barking was not acceptable by giving her one warning of calmly saying 'no bark' and then at the instant she barked again I took her away and left her in the car (in the shade in winter, so safe) for 10 mins. Then I'd go back and get her with no comment about the barking. I spent an entire herding day doing it. I swear we went back and forward to the car well over a dozen times and I despaired of her getting the message. Two weeks later we went back to herding. She barked, I put her in the car, went and brought her back to the herding pen and she never barked again. It was as if she needed time away to process the lesson and/or another day to realise that I was serious about it. So whatever method you try I think its important to realise that patience, calmness, consistency and time are important factors. Good luck |
I have tried many of the suggestions in the past So far nothing has worked I even tried a collar that sent (oh I forget the word ) into the air but no luck. I have a shock collar but do not want to use it on her. She is an old lady like me and I don't think I want to do that to her |
Hi Jean, Willoughby started barking at people we met on our walks. I couldn't stop him, so I let him bark four or five times, and then asked him to sit for a treat. He lost interest in barking, and sat or stood quietly while I chatted with the passerby. I realize this runs counter to the good advice you have received, but it worked. He was about nine when this started, so I thought the reward for sitting might take his mind off barking. As I lost him, aged 11 and seven months, at the beginning of December, your post brought back recent memories! Best wishes! |
Happy New Year~~ Maybe a visit to the vet to make sure that there is nothing wrong ...i.e...ear infection....thyroid imbalance.....joint pain...????? Just a suggestion.. Hope you find a solution soon~~~ |
Jean~~I have been in a puppy obedience class with Wynn and we have many barking puppies that really disrupt the class (Wynn is NOT one of them Thank goodness!! ) The trainer had bitter apple in a spray pursesize bottle and whenever one of the pups barked, she would squirt the bitter apple in their mouth and growl "NO BARK". Then the trainer would follow it by a happy voice ..." Good no bark!!" I witnessed most of the dogs needed only a few corrections before they connected the bark with the 'bitter apple' ~~it doesn't hurt them, but it is not a pleasant taste for them. You may want to try this, if you haven't already... Let us know how it is going~~~~~ |
