Breeder question - Kalvigshire in Minnesota

Hello - Has anyone had any experience with Kalvigshire OES in Minnesota? They will provide AKC# and a health guarantee, which is wonderful! Just wondering if anyone has heard of them or had any OES pups from them? Thanks!

The first thing I see is that the breeder (who I've never heard of until this post) charges $1,200 for a puppy from parents who have not had any health testing or OFA clearances done. This is in the same price range that a show breeder would charge for a pup from a litter with a pedigree full of conformation Champions that have had all of the recommended testings done! This breeder's health guarantee is barely a guarantee as issues have to be life-threatening. There are a lot of health issues that can be expensive to treat that are not life-threatening. You could be stuck with a dog that is crippled or challenged in another way . Your breeder should always be willing to take a dog back at any time for whatever reason. Also, an AKC registration means virtually nothing. It's simply a registry for purebred dogs. It's not some seal of approval that there are show Champions in the pedigree or this is a great dog etc.

Before you put down a deposit (which by the way, is that deposit refundable if there are no puppies?) go to the OESCA Breeder Referral on the Old English Sheepdog Club of America web site: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ferral.php. The more informed you are the better decision you can make when obtaining a new companion. They can be with us many years. Let's give them the best chance at a happy and healthy life.

Check out this guide to buying a puppy from one of our forum members, Jaci:

Val, that's only in writing. I get a lot more passionate in person on this topic.

Seriously, anyone who has been involved in rescue or has adopted a dog that had special needs understands how important this is. People here on the forum have purchased puppies that ended up with health issues. Yes, it can happen to anyone, whether testing has or has not been done. You just want to do everything you can to give your puppy the best chance in life. Again, I'm not slamming this breeder as I don't know them. But why pay the same price for a puppy from someone with a sketchy "health guarantee" when you can have one with written assurances that the parents are clear of specific defects by veterinary specialists? The only answer is supply and demand. Some breeders want to make money by breeding frequently but a responsible breeder breeds to improve the breed. Litters can be infrequent. Sadly, the instant gratification factor of having a puppy on demand often makes buyers make less than informed choices. There are plenty of members here who have made a such a decision. They rarely do it twice.

Whatever you decide, I do wish you many years of life and love from your Old English Sheepdog. They are a fabulous breed for those of us who are passionate about them. It is worth the wait to find the right dog, whether a rescue or from whatever breeder you choose. Good luck in your search and keep us updated here on the forum!
