I did a search and didn't find a topic on this, but I apologize if I missed something. We have an OES puppy who is about 5 months old - and huge! And a full grown basset hound (forceful but short!). Half of our downstairs is hardwood and half is carpeted. We'd like to put up two gates to keep the dogs on the hardwoods because our sheepie still has accidents (we're trying - but not there yet) and also because it will keep them from heading upstairs. They have crates in the garage where they sleep, but I don't want them always crated to keep them off the carpet, I just can't watch them all the time. (I have 3 kids that I homeschool). All that to say, we're looking at gates. We've had tension gates in the past with my basset and find they usually damage the walls from the kids not quite using them correctly, so I was thinking maybe a gate I installed would work better. I'd love any advice about what gates have worked for you with a dog as big as an OES. He doesn't seem inclined to jump but would barrel through something flimsy to get to what he wants, I think. Thanks in advance! |

Good question! We always used just a mesh tension barrier, but no kids and our dogs were always adults and we used them mainly in the motorhome. |
I use an extra tall gate with a door built in I got at Petsmart... if you search for extra tall dog gate you will find it on Amazon too. It has a cat gate which I need but it can be locked if you don't. It's white metal and very sturdy. I have hardwood and it doesn't scratch. |
Congrats on your new bundle of joy! Yes, containment is key. I have three Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate, and have had no problems with them. https://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Easy-Whit ... +with+door Even though they are tension gates, I have not had a problem with them damaging the door frames. You an also purchase these little cup things that help save your door frames. https://www.amazon.com/Wall-Saver-Press ... KE6Y9979FB I like these because they are portable. We traveled a lot with our puppy, and these were super handy to have. Good luck! |
I have 2 old fashioned pressure gates. They work ok...so I won't be buying any new ones... |
