Hi Karen. We experienced a similar situation this summer with Charm, our 6 y/o. She would lunge viciously at the sight of other dogs. These dogs were in their own yards not even close to us. After exhausting our limited knowledge, our behaviorist vet felt that it was barrier aggression. (She will sometimes do this in her kennel at shows too). The remedy was to drive around the neighborhood, divert her attention with a treat when we saw another dog. Good girl, etc. even if she reacted for a split second. The hope was to make her expect a treat when she saw a dog and forget about being aggressive. Over a period of two weeks, there was marked improvement. She has not had an incident in well over two months. We are especially careful at trials, keeping her in a wire crate. I gradually weaned off the tears but keep the praises flowing for good behavior. Good luck with your Charlie. Hope this helps. |
I have heard that dogs consider their 'cars' as their kennels..so their resource guarding kicks in.....Brenda's suggestion seems like a way to desensitize this behavior in a positive way...Good Luck and Keep us posted on Charlie's progress... |
Yes, training. MO could herd cars, on coming, passing, etc. Woe be to anything behind us. Part resource guarding, part herding instinct. Remember, they don't "speaka our language" so don't understand complex explanations. You are the one to use your brain and redirect their brain thru diversion and reward. |
