One of the things they want to check out with recurring UTI is a functional reason for the infection. This could be an odd shaped bladder that retains urine rather than expelling all of it, which is a risk factor for UTIs. If there is one, they look for a cause to see if it is fixable. Have they done a sterile culture? There are many different types of bacteria that can cause infections. They will usually start with a basic antibiotic, for a short course (time). Sometimes they need a different antibiotic or need it for longer if it has become chronic. (I spent 3 months on antibiotics for a sinus infection one time) Consider using a probiotic. Has your vet suggested cranberry juice/cranberry supplements/vitamin C? There is conflicting info out there as to whether it works (its not the acidic urine that works, but the vitamin C in the berries help prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder). Might be worth a try. |
