Spaying and Neutering your dogs is always a good idea, if you have no plans of breeding your dog, to help prevent unwanted puppies from happening. I think the health issues come into play when considering the time frame for getting it done. I think many breeders suggest waiting until the dog is at least a year old; the hormones help with proper growth. In females, I think they suggest allowing at least one heat cycle? I'm really not 100% sure-- maybe some more experienced people can weigh in? |
I'm going to give you what you need so you can look for the details...I don't remember the bits and pieces as they don't apply to me anymore but this is what it is all about. For large breed dogs you should wait past the usual hurry up and get it done due to the growth plates. I believe it is close to a year. The idea is letting them close so you aren't effecting the growth of your babe. The closer you get to a year the better. I believe every household varies. Yes, if you aren't breeding the health pro's still outweigh the con's it is only the timing that is in question. Usually if you are getting the Pexy and Neuter done at the same time you have to wait for the dog to be old/developed enough for the Pexy so you have already reached a certain age anyway. |
According to our breeder, spay after the first heat cycle and neuter no sooner than 14 months. |
My Golden was neutered at 18 1/2 months. The breeder wanted to be sure he reached his full growth. He was my first to wait that long (the next oldest is years older than he is) and it wasn't a problem at all. Boz, just over a year old, is going to be done at Christmas, when I will be able to be home with him for a few days. He will be 18 months old. |
A link so you can decide when is the right time http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTerm ... InDogs.pdf Around 18 months is good for the males in this breed |
