I have a beautiful 9 month, 78 lbs. puppy. We're about to move to Atlanta, and it's time I learn how to trim him myself. I bought a used Andis clipper and have successfully learned how to line brush him out, trim around his face and between his paws. I've never done the body. His hair grows incredibly fast, and I would like to keep him comfortable for the summer in the high heat. Does anyone know of an excellent online video tutorial for grooming OES? Any advice on combs that go over the blades or the best type of thinning shears you've had success with would be most appreciate! Thanks! K and Barney |

I'm in Atlanta! Welcome to the neighborhood! I can introduce you to a good groomer. I've trimmed my girls myself, and afterward I always think "Well that went about as poorly as it could have". So I would not be a good option to show you how to trim. I bath, brush and can maintain a show coat, but I leave trimming to my groomer. |
Here's a link to trimming videos that I've found helpful. http://www.untilyoufindme.com/ Also, there are three sticky notes in the grooming section of the board index with general info. Let us know how it goes |
Thank you! Allison, if you don't mind, can you please send me the contact info of your groomer? My email is katherine@emeneth.com. Thanks! |
email sent! |
If you decide to groom you dog yourself, forget the clipper combs. They just don't work well on an OES. Allison will be a great help for you in Atlanta. |
thanks Nita! Though really, I can help with washing and brushing and even a little with scissoring. But not so much when it comes to trimming. |
Even if you can't do all the trimming, Allison, you know your way around Atlanta and found the best groomers, vets and resources in the area. The Atlanta Pet Expo and dog shows are great resources for buying thinning shears and nice equipment. If possible, try fitted items like shears before you buy. Items like these get pricey and buying good euipment is always worth it if you plan on grooming your dog yourself. Clipping is easy, having your dog stand still is more difficult. Practice good grooming table behavior. If you don't have a grooming table, get one before considering any other major purchase. Even if you use a groomer, your groomer will thank you for it. Get your pup used to nail clipping. Most dogs dislike their feet handled so work on getting him/her comfortable with that. It's a learning process for all of us! |
