Looks like a little old to start, but it's better than nothing. What we did when potty training Lennon was a combination of things. first of all, get some dog diapers, you can get them at Petsmart, Walmart or Big Lots. Also, an enzimatic odor remover will help you a lot.
You will need at least a whole weekend for this (For a start). Keep an eye on your sheepie at all times, when you see it sniff and circle, take it to the diaper, and then wait with him until he goes, When he's going, say his potty phrase, like Go Potty! or something. Immediatly afterwards, feed him with his favorite treat and give lots, lots of praise. It's very important to praise immediatly and keep an eye on the dog at all times to avoid accidents. If one happens, say nothing and clean up. The most important thing is to make it fun for him to go on the pad and nowhere else. Once you sheepie is used to the pad, move it closer to the yard until you can leave it outside. Also, every time he goes outside on his own, give lots and lots of praise as he is going and keep on saying Go Potty!, then keep on making it fun to go outside. A few days of training should be enough. Do not scold the dog if he makes a mistake, since that will only trigger a fearful reaction and probably he will only wet himself more. Praise and fun are better, since they respond very well to positive reactions. Lennon is so well trained now that he even knoks on the door at night so he can go! Hopefully this advise will be useful for you, all it takes is some effort to have a nice trained sheepie. Good Luck! |
