Some of you know that I'm also a kids entertainer besides a teacher, so I had a few shows lined up to keep me out of the poor house. Usually I'm booked all summer long at festivals and civic events but only took a few gigs this summer to pay the morgage and buy groceries but no extras. I wanted to be able to enjoy time with all my uprights and furballs so the exhange is well worth it! Out of the blue a clown friend whom I haven't seen in 5 years calls me up and ask me to help her with balloon twisting at a huge 2 day event. (I dislike balloon twisting as you get a gazillion kids in huge lineups). It's really tough work as your fingers get cut badly from tying balloons, your arms really ache from the arm motions you do with a balloon pump. Your wrist start to ache too and imagine 3 hrs of it! Urg 3 hours of this for 2 days ? Now while it sounds like a lot of fun it's really hard work too. Means being out in the hot sun for 3 hours daily with layers of clown costume on . Drat they wanted a clown and not a magician. Means I have to don hair net, wig, bloomers, crinoline slip, floresent dress, pink neon stockings and striped socks. Not to mention my big clown shoes and the makeup which takes over 1-2 hrs to put on.However, I agreed as the money was atronomical for the 2 day event which is coming up this weekend. 600 dollars for 2 days of twisting!! I've been doing the happy dance as I now will have some extra cash!! Then I found out who the featured act will be at this grand store opening...The Black Eyed Peas!!! Groannnnnn NOOOOO . I adore this group..really I do!! I realize tho that so does everyone else in my city of 3 million!!!!! Means everyone and their dog will be there...and probably wanting a balloon while they are at it. I'm probably going to spend the following week recouperating from sun exhaustion and sore muscles. LOL... sounds like fun! |
Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy! **jumping up & down in excitement**
Do you get to meet them as extra incentive for all the hard work you'll be doing?? |
Marianne?
Did you live in Winnipeg for a while by chance? Also, I went to the Black Eyed Peas for Bluesfest in Ottawa, and I don't want to freak you out but there were 50,000 people! A record for the festival! That is one heck of a lot of balloons! Colleen and Gucci George |
who are the black eyed peas?? |
OMG Darcy!!!!
Let's get retarded (or started) Oh Mama Don't Phunk with my Heart! I'd sing the whole albums for you...I LOVE THEM! Colleen and GG=>sometimes I'm glad I can't hear Mommy, especially in the car! Her head is always bobbing and her mouth is constantly moving? |
Okay, I still dont know who they are...hum me a tune are they rock, punk, soul...what? what age group are they? I think youre about my age, big in the 80's 90's what? Lisa (my twin) was into punk...the clash, depeche mode etc...I was into Prince, Michael Jackson(before he was wacko Jacko)and my favorite grand master flash I think I missed something here as I have never heard of them...I dont think...again, colleen, sing it to me ...lalalalalalala |
Maybe you should start out tying balloons in the designated area and then start to slowly edge your way towards the stage. Before you know it, you'd be right there while they perform. Maybe you could even work your way backstage. Just tell them that your laminate is under your costume and you can't get to it right now! |
Maxmm wrote: Just tell them that your laminate is under your costume and you can't get to it right now! Don't be silly! Everyone knows that you just have to pull on the flower on the clown's lapel and his/her trousers drop! |
Marianne - do you have pictures anywhere of you in clown costume? After your description of all the work to get ready, I'm very intrigued! Darcy, you're so funny about the black eyed peas!! I just saw them in a movie, ummm - oh "Stay Cool" with John Travolta and Uma Thurman. They have that guy as a piano player, what's his name? Carlos Santana, I think.
Karen |
Don't feel bad Darcy, when I saw the heading I thought it would have a recipe for peas |
Y'all are crackin me up!
Okay -here's the link to check out the Black Eyed Peas http://www.blackeyedpeas.com/home/bio |
This is the last thing I thought this was going to be about. lol
first I thought black eyed peas... I mean, seems like something you'd have an exciting and funny to tell us (at the store or something) then, I thought, the restaurant, Black Eyed Peas (I used to work there). ...but I open it up and it's a group! lol Well, hopefully they appreciate your hard work!!! ...and the weather is friendly!!! I'm sure it will be fun!! |
So Carlos Santana is in the group? I have heard of him!!!! I need to down load some music so I can figure this out ....its driving me crazy!
I also thought before I opened it that this would have a recipe in it..lol..... |
Marianne I'll pray for cool weather, I know how miserable clown white is in hot weather!!
I like to eat black eyed pease with rice.............. but never heard em make much noise. |
Darcy wrote: So Carlos Santana is in the group? I have heard of him!!!! I need to down load some music so I can figure this out ....its driving me crazy!
No, Carlos Santana is not in the group. It's a hip hop group with 3 guys and a girl named Fergie. It's on the Top 40 station Darcy, but not on The Peak (70s and 80s station) which explains why we don't listen to it Marianne, I'm envious of the clown costume! The makeup and wig don't sound like fun on a hot day, but the bright pink stockings and crinolines sound awesome! In fact, it sounds like an outfit I would have worn in the 80s, back in the Madonna/Culture Club days. |
Theresa my assistant just loaded a song for me...yup, Ive never heard of them My age is finally showing....sigh....I feel like my dad...he only listens to the "oldies"...50-60 era music...Im getting there, pretty soon the 70-80's music WILL be the oldies....hahaha
Im up on the pink crinoline...no makeuo tho, I cant wait to wipe the junk I wear to work when I get home....drat the dark circles... |
Tasker's |
Hi,
Going to head out in about 15 mins. Yeah the weather is cool so I won't be dying ..but yikes 50,000 showed up on the East Coast to see them? Oh groaners I had to race out this morning to pick up more balloons just in case the crowds are larger than I imagined. Funny you guys mentioned Santana as I was on before him one time during a telethon. Okay his appearance was via satellite while I was on live. Ha Ha! Here's my website - IT'S UNFINISHED!! Contains funny things as my friend whom was making it left lots of notes on there to comment on. I was supposed to send him the wording and other things I wanted. Still you can view the pics of my characters. http://members.home.nl/sourcerer/Chrystal/index.html Marianne and the boys |
OMG...I'm laughing so hard! This post has gotten out of hand, hasn't it! LOL
Yes, Darcy, you and I are the same age, except I'm not very good at accepting the "mid-thirties"! LOL As my dad puts it (when I tell him my latest adventures) "when you were a kid, you acted and thought you were 55 and now you act and think like you are 18!" It drives him nuts! And I love to get a rise out of him! OMG I am 18! As for Carlos Santana, he plays the guitar, not the piano, well...at least I'm not aware of him tinkling the ivory! And as for the 80's, I loved all the punk too! But mostly I was a Rocker! With really big hair! Well, I digress! Marianne: GOOD LUCK! This weekend! I really hope we can see some pictures! "Hey Mama, it's that beat that make you move, Mama. Get on the floor and move your booty Mama!" Thought I would sing a little BEP's, I also personally think this is an excellent song to twist balloons to! Colleen and Gucci George=>she's moving her mouth and bopping her head again! |
Marianne - you're adorable as each and every one of your characters! Good luck in the heat with the balloons! |
Marianne, I love your website!!!!! Have fun this weekend!!
Colleen...Sing it girl!!! |
Apparently, I'm as clueless as you Darcy. Did anyone see Stay Cool?? Who was the guy playing with them? O.k., I just checked with my husband. It was Sergio Mendez and I guess it was just part of the movie (I'm definately feeling silly now). Mendez, Santana - they sound the same - no??
Karen |
Marianne - your website cracked me up. I love your friends' comments! I think Miss Parfait is my favorite!!
Karen |
YOUR WEBSITE IS GREAT!!!!
Now after all this, I think you should do something to a BEP song! Karen, it's OK! I normally don't have a clue about these things either, I'm just a huge fan of this band! Good Luck Marianne!!!! Colleen and Gucci George=>she's still singing Darcy! Stop encouraging her! |
Darcy wrote: ...Im getting there, pretty soon the 70-80's music WILL be the oldies....hahaha
Darcy, I don't know about AZ but here in CA 70-80's music is considered oldies or classic rock. I feel really old when I hear "Now here is a real oldie from 1980 something" lol Gosh 1980's seems like just yesterday. Marianne, Sorry you have to wear all that stuff. Hope it wasn't too hot! I am sure the temporary pain will be worth it for the $$ Hope you didn't have to make thousands of balloon animals Elissa |
I love your website!!!! The pictures are too cute
You are so multi-faceted! |
>>Puff Puff...It's me. Thanks everyone for the comments and Karen that's whom my favorite character is..Miss Parfait.. She's quite the looker isn't she? ha ha! She thinks she's a southern belle. Please note: I'm mentally sound but it's common for those of us in this business to refer to our characters in third person.
Ohmygawd!! The crowds for the free concert were unbelievable - traffic was backed for miles! It was soooo hot!! I spoke too soon when I said the weather was cool as by the time I arrived it was really scorching! There were a gazillion people and kids! The button on my bloomers fell off so I could feel them falling while I tried as natural as possible to yank them up. Ha ha!! A clown has to stay modest you know..hee hee! Not only were the Black Eyes Peas there, but afterwards was a autograph session with Spider Man. I've been doing this for over 17 years and never seen an event that had so many entertainers and games free to the public. They had mascots, batman, Link from Zelda, facepainters, ladies on stilts, a parrot type person, more clowns, magicians and even a guy in a silver outfit posing as a statue. It was unbelievable! My fingers were cut (much like paper cuts) I recieved from tying the numerous balloons so it looked funny at the end of the day when I had bandaged fingers. I think between me and my clown friend we made 800 balloons. Imagine using a pump and blowing up hundreds of balloons that would put a weight lifter to shame! I'm on tomorrow again for a few hours and will spend the rest of the week recouperating. No wonder they offered so much $ as I don't think I've ever worked so hard at an event. I was praying my old van would make it as I still have problems with it overheating so I drove with the heat on, in full clown costume..oh happy joy joy! It shook like crazy on the bridge on my way home and I was doing a lot of self talk...please let me make it home..don't die on the bridge while I'm in my clown outfit..please let it make it over the bridge. Okay those are the bad parts of doing this..I'm going to write a post one day on the fun stuff. Taskers mom whom also does this and I should share stories. All I can say is Sheepies are the perfect dogs for us! Happy the Clown |
I'm trying to decide if you should stop for a clown with a broken down vehicle.
On one hand, it's a clown. How bad could someone be who is only trying to make people laugh? On the other hand, it could be one of those evil clowns from the movies! The car isn't really broken down, he's just using it to get you to pull over! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!! |
The other night on Cops, they had a cop dressed up as a clown soliciting prostitutes so they could bust them. Getting in the car with a clown didn't work out too well for them... |
Marianne, one day my daughter and I were doing two different "gigs" in one day. They were some distance apart and we didn't have alot of time so we stayed in full makeup. You shoulda seen the looks we got driving down the highway two clowns in the front seat!!! My daughter was a teenager then as was especially embarressed when we had to stop for gas
We had a beeeeutiful day here yesterday, sunshine and low humidity. I thought about you and hoped your was equally as nice. Sounds like loads of fun, wish I was close enough to join you!!!!! But I still say black eyed peas are for eatin' Ginny |
You guys are cracking me up!!
Taskers mom can't wait to swap more adventure on the road stories! That story you told was hilarious and I'm sure my teenage son could relate to that experience. He never performed with me, but the odd time had to drive in my car and literally hid under covers in the back seat. Ha Ha! Mandy...Sometimes you have to watch for all the clowns on the road. Marianne and the boys |
HAH HAH HAH Marianne!!
Excellent line! |
