Let's see... I have raynauds... disease triggered by weather under 70 degrees where i get what is best described as arthritis attacks in my hands. What better place to go!!! Otherwise, I'm stoked. I'll be SO MISERABLE, but what an experience!! Husband has to go to airborne school first though. not sure how that works, just that I can't go with him. It's in north carolina for "we think" ...just 2 wks in late november. He graduates at the end of Sept from his military advanced schooling stuff, so I assume we leave after that. Poor Maltese will be so cold. All my husband can say is YUKI and I will have SO much fun outside!!! Me: Uhh.... you do realize you're married to me not Yuki right? Him: Bahhh.. that's just what the paper says. |

Anchorage or Fairbanks? |
Oh I'm envious! I would LOVE to live in Alaska! It's so beautiful!
I'm sorry about the arthitis thing, keep your house well heated, and buy "hotshots" for your mitts. Buy big mitts, not gloves! It sounds so exciting! You'll have to post tons and tons of pics for us....pleeeeaaaaseeee.... |
That really does sound exciting!
Very cool! (no pun intended) |
Anchorage. I think. It's Ft. Richardson. It's all new and we don't have details, so things are unclear. Airborne school is for Anchorage though.
Thanks you guys!! I really don't know whether I should wipe this endless smile on my face. You know how when it's hot, you wish it's cold? Well, here I am (it's 101 today) and I keep thinking Alaska would be so neat. ...cruises where we see whales, so many neat north pole-type workshops for the kiddo, outdoor activities, etc. But when you're actually In the cold, you're like "oh my gosh, I hate this!!!! Bring on the sun!!!" hahahaha What are hotshots? Inserts for mittens? I know nOTHInG about cold weather stuff. I wear gloves in the summer in TX b/c the AC in places triggers attacks, so I imagine I'll need a miracle. lol |
Aww, man! If you were going to get posted to a cold weather state, couldn't it have been at least MN?! Hang in there... Good luck with the new post

Yes hotshots are carbon inserts for mitts and boots to keep your hands and feet warm. You shake them, they get hot, and they stay hot for several hours. |
Anchorage isn't really all that cold, believe it or not. It's not all that much colder than Boston, and not nearly as cold as Minnesota.
It is definately colder than Texas. lol Anchorage is in a caldera (IIRC) and is somewhat shielded from the very cold blasts of air, while warmed by the ocean, actually! It is also about 300 miles south of Fairbanks, so that helps, too. I just found a page about it -- I have no idea if this page is authoritative or not: http://www.wtv-zone.com/alaskaman/NewWe ... imate.html |
Cool! I wanna go! LOL |

Hi Joahaeyo, One word: LL Bean www.llbean.com Great stuff for cold weather, would not have made it through last winter without the jacket I got from them! In a few weeks they will have their Winter attire posted, its Fall stuff now online. Best wishes, my Dad loved Alaska when he was stationed there in the Service. The Iditarod is really neat to see, a grand sleddog race. Its amazing the work the mushers and dogs do through the year to get ready for it. www.iditarod.com Stay warm! |
My heart dropped when I saw your post's subject line as I immediately worried that he was going back to Iraq. Glad it's Alaska!!
I'm sure Willowsprite & the other Canadians on this board can give you great advice about keeping warm. And your Maltese will be very happy snuggling with Yuki. ~VerveUp |
Thanks. I'm so nervous And excited.
There's a guy in the class ahead of my husband (by 6wks) that has a wife I met the first day I got to Oklahoma who is due 3 days before me. Anywhoo... they are also going to Alaska, so it will be nice to already have someone to not only help us move (housing, places to eat, etc), but I can schedule playdates with. She also has a dog that is 7lbs and a herding dog that is 50lbs (our dogs are 6lbs and about 56lbs). now we have 2 1/2 months to buy a house before get there!!! Btw, my belly is starting to hang over my pants. I feel so fat. lol It's just so hard to adapt/adjust to your changing body! 11 more days until I "hopefully" find out the sex. With my luck, she won't be able to see anything. |
Oh, just as a correction ...his airborne school is in Georgia at the end of Sept. |
Jo,
Alaska, How exciting! And someone else with a baby to hang out with is even better Good Luck! Also we want baby tummy pics!! How far along are you now? Elissa |
WAYYYYYYYY COOOOOOOOLLLLLL (so to speak-no pun intended). Get some of those handwarmers that hunters use. Maybe with the increase in your circulating blood volume d/t pregnancy you will see a bit of improvement in the raynauds, at least til the baby is born.
I can't even begin to imagine you with a belly after seeing your pencil thin wedding pics!!! Congratulations and BEST wishes. You need to knit some sweaters for the malt!!!! |
When you get settled in let us know. That way we can all start making our vacation plans, to come stay with you and babysit. Hey, I'm always up for free room. But seriously, hope you enjoy it. Sounds like fun, even though hubby will be working. Good luck. |
Airborne in the cooler weather. How fortunate!
As for cold weather, think clothing in layers. Friend was there for 3 years. LOVED IT. Problem was she would swim for combat winter blahs and said all that dressing and undressing got to be a drag. You don't exactly don shorts over your suit and head to the pool, LOL |
Betsy, come on over!!!! I haven't had her yet, but I have sure heard that I'll appreciate any SLEEP and family coming to help out. hehe
Plus, I wouldn't mind a shopping friend while the husband is at work. Someone else said this about Alaska. Thought it was funny. In Alaska, a woman's odds are good--but the goods are odd. Anywho, I'm excited because we've already begun house shopping. A 1500 sq ft home on average (in otherwords, lowest we can find so far) ...is $240,000 Holy Moly!!! So we're targeting for around $199,000-210,000 which we may have found. Friend is trying to get us to buy the other side of their townhome (w/heated garage!) that is being built right now (be ready in nov. Our first home. I love the sound of that. |
That sounds like it would be great! Good luck with that!

That's really funny!!!!! Glad you already have YOUR GOODS!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I liked that quote too!!! And yes, "Our first home" does have a nice ring to it!!! |
I have recently discovered that is an IMMENSLEY powerful phrase! What an exiciting time- a new family, a new home, a new arrival! Gee your not busy, or anything, are you?!
Karen |
We have some really good friends that are in Anchorage Alaska right now. They are military and moved last year right before thier baby was born!! THEY LOVE IT THERE!!! They were really reluctant too, but when they arrived they loved it from the beginning!!! I am sure they would love to meet you and show you around. Let me know if I can put you in touch! |
