Even though I do not work outside and have to deal with the elements, I do understand job burn out. I have been @my job for 18 years and I call it 'hard time'. Many changes, and numerous ones not for the better. I am fed up with nepotism, cronyism and favoritism. The "little girls clique' is so out of control and have an extremely poor work ethic. They come and go as they please, being on time means nothing to them, leave to go shopping or out to lunch without punching out, plus they disappear several times per day, together, for long periods of time to bs. Management does nothing because they are the chosen ones. (I'm so glad I'm not one of the chosen) To me it is stealing because the time at work is more social than business. You can't tell them anything because they know it all. I so want to tell them they need to take more work' breaks. If they worked in a business where they didn't have the connections, they would be fired.
To me, this is a very toxic, unhealthy environment, especially being older. Come the first of the year, I plan to look for a part time job, maybe 3 days per week plus start collecting my social security. I don't want to wait any longer to collect more. I will always have to work. I am hoping to find something I will really love. Ideally, it will be with animals (the 4 legged kind) and maybe sign up with dogvacy and dog sit while people go on vacation.

So, burn out? I get it! That's my plan, but we all know, life is what happens after you make plans. Good luck!! Do you feel a little better after reading my reply? :)
Yes I DO !!!! I like the life is what happens after you make plans,,,,OMG that is so darn true.....hope you will find something you love come first of the year.
Season change helps the working outside, but the in between mild season is followed by another lousy season. Got to where I couldn't stand being in the sun anymore. I never wanted to be indoors but when I was forced to......now I rarely go outside......I'm becoming a hermit..........help. These days there is no stigma about changing jobs, it is rare to put in 30 or more years doing the same thing. Bodies change, your priorities change.
I had a miserable job at one point - high pressure, high stress, everyone in the office was always on edge. And to add injury to insult, I developed severe pain in both hands, spending 8 months in wrist splints 24/7, eating Ibuprofen like it was candy, and going to all kinds of specialists to try to get a diagnosis.

Morale was so bad, upper management had a company meeting, and gave this guideline, which I think is pretty accurate:

If you're getting up 1 day a week and thinking, "I can't deal with work today!" that's pretty normal - and it's probably a Monday.

If that's happening 2 or 3 days a week, you're having a rough stretch, but it will probably even out soon.

But if you're consistently getting up 4 days a week thinking, "I can't deal with this job!" there is definitely a problem, and something needs to change.

I was getting up 5 days a week and hating the idea of going to work, and losing my weekends to pain in my hands and dread of another week of this crap job ahead of me. And I realized this guy was right - I had to do something! So I started a job search, and within a month I handed in my notice. Best thing I ever did.

I'd say take a good, hard look, and decide if this is really burn-out, or just a bad stretch. And if it's genuine burn-out, try to find another job. If another job isn't an option, find something to do outside of work that makes you happy - join a bowling league, a book club, a hiking/biking group, treat yourself to a weekly massage or movie.

Oh yeah - the chronic pain in my hands? Disappeared the moment I handed in my notice. Some people get migraines, I get hand pain. Go figure!
Thanks,,,glad you found a job that your hands don't hurt......been taking phlebotomist classes at night to maybe go in that direction, or at least a back up plan. I really do think a lot of it is the weather. It was and is so hot here this summer, drenching in sweat all day....hope this will pass and i will feel better. I do have a great boss, can work my own hours somewhat, can take days off if i really need too and we have great benefits.....i am just so tired of driving every day and my feet look like elephant feet at the end of the day from sitting so much,,,not to mention the waist :( looks like an elephant waist as well. the only thing is if i do look, change jobs, i know it would be a cut in pay, and i don't think i can afford it,,,so just kinda feel stuck.......trying to hang in there till fall comes......
thanks all for letting me know I am not alone, others have gone through this as well. think its time for pie.................
think its time for pie.................  Men in Black??

Let's not talk feet.......... :( Exercise to get body moving......even it means 30 earlier in the a.m. Plus another 30 min. at night. Is there something that really gives you pleasure and is not fattening or immoral? For me it's water. I love being IN it, not around it. Wish I had a pool at home and public pool wasn't a 30 minute drive, but for me it's worth it.....and my feet like it. If it wouldn't freak out the life guards, I'd nap in the water. When we had a pool, I'd do that......what a wonderful way to relax and exercising was a joy, not sweat because you are already wet.
What you are going through is not unusual. Jonsey gave you really great advise.
update,,,,well i finished my phlebotomist class and passed the exam, so now certified....can take the nationals in dec and get nationally certified....geez, just having this under my belt makes me feel not so tied down to my job....but the weather has cooled some so i seem to be doing better....boss is taking me and another lady out for crab legs to celebrate our 6 year anniversary....yum !!!!
thanks all for helping me through my slump.
