Her teeth hurt and she is discovering her world with her mouth, all very normal. But those puppy teeth are sharp! Dog toy, chew toy are good things to shove in mouth. If it is part of her play..........she must be taught that chewing and biting ends all play immediately. First you let out at yelp of pain (puppies understand the sudden pain sound) and immediately walk away, leave her alone, etc. She.....eventually learns......hurting your playmate ends play time. You stay away a minute or more--just suddenly leave, no scolding, the yelp should do. For one particularly aggressive dog, when she returned after my yelp.......I growled at her and walked away again. After a few minutes I returned as if nothing had happened. All forgiven. Sometimes you have to think like a dog, not a human. |
Very good advise that Susan has given you. I would also advise the children to wear long sleeves and pants until the puppy is out of this stage. I had two puppies together last year and I have two puppies now and I would suggest the yipping and I say no bite! You have remember that puppies are like human babies in they explore the world with their mouths. They will bite at each other, but they have hair to protect them which we don't. Don't allow them to jump up on anyone, pull your knee up, put your hand out and catch their head, turn you back, but don't let them jump up even once and get a "pet" for it because you think it's cute. You have children and you don't want them to get pushed over ever. These dogs grow fast and strong. As for the furniture, you'll have to keep taking them off and telling him "no". Now remember, you can't say "no" all the time and then change the rules and expect the dog not to get confused. Enjoy your puppy, they are small for not long. |
Thanks for the advice. She is more challenging than I remember our first being. |
