I'm looking for recommendations for a senior dog food for my 8 year old OES, Gus. He has been gaining weight, despite our best attempts at weight loss through exercise and decreased portions. He currently is on a herring and sweet potato food formula, and has shown some sensitivity to chicken and rice formulas a long time ago. He does, however, seem to be especially itchy lately so we're wondering if his current food is starting to bother him (but we really have no idea, as the itchiness could be totally unrelated). We're considering Fromm's senior food, but we've just started looking for a new food type and haven't done much research yet. Anyone have success with senior formula's helping their dog lose the excess weight? Any success with itchiness being relieved through diet change? Thank you! Carol |

Might also have the thyroid check. One older girl developed it around age 8 and once we got that straightened around, the extra pounds starting leaking off.....slowly. Keep up the exercise, maybe more frequent, shorter walks for this aging hips. I'm currently feeding Canidae, not a senior blend but grain free. It's one that Kensie can tolerate, Fromm wasn't for her tummy. Each dog different. You can cut back a bit on the food and add some low cal veggies as a filler. Stand by is green beans (start with one at a time) unless you have a garbage gut like I do who will eat anything! With the older dogs you have to go slow. Itching might also be thyroid, grass allergies or food allergies...........and then something more serious. 9/10 times it's an environmental allergy. |
