For the very first time ever (for both Hubby & me) - we hit a deer tonight. At highway speed. Bad news for the deer (though I don't think he had time to even know what hit him), bad news for the car (our only vehicle), but no one in the car was hurt. And Benson's seatbelt did exactly what it was supposed to do. We were also an hour away from home, and luckily the tow-truck driver was willing (albeit reluctantly) to drive us there. It was pretty cozy in the cab with the driver, his wife, Hubby and me, and, of course, Benson. Poor baby had to be lifted into the truck, and once Hubby climbed in, she couldn't move - couldn't sit, couldn't turn, could barely even shift her weight, and had both my and Hubby's legs practically pinning her to the dashboard. She rode for an hour standing up in the front wheel well, and never fussed once. She even waited patiently for Hubby to lift her down when we got home, even though she was clearly ready to be OUT! She really is the best dog I have ever had. Oh yeah - we told the cop it was the first time we'd hit a deer. He shook both of our hands, and said "Welcome to the club - you're officially Central New Yorkers now!" |

What a good girl Sorry to hear about the deer and the car |
Glad to hear you guys & Benson are OK. Sorry about the car. Did it kill the deer? Often times it just injures them. Killing them with the car is actually more humane. And I was going to say the same thing the cop did. Welcome to Central New York. |

Today the fun starts - insurance claim started? Check. Tow to the body shop set? Check. Rental car reserved? Check. Savings wiped out to pay for all of this? Check. Just waiting to confirm my ride to the rental car company tomorrow morning, and we can continue on our merry way again. |
Heck, it shouldn't be welcome to central New York, it should just be welcome to New York. Even in my neck of the woods (NYC area) the deer are a major problem and believe it or not there are plenty of deer in NYC proper! A while back in police car in my town hit a deer while on patrol. Glad to hear you are okay, even though the deer and the car are not. |
So glad you all are o.k. Sorry about the deer and car, but at least you HAD savings to help cover things. I drive rural routes down here in south carolina and see deer all the time. That is my worst fear, hitting one, and no savings. Or getting hurt and being out of work. I always wondered about the dog seat-belts and do they work. Will have to invest in one. Again, so glad everyone is o.k. That must of been scary. |
You are all so lucky you were not hurt. The deer could have come thru the windshield!!!! Glad you are all ok! I am curious about the type of seatbelt used for Benson. What kind an where to purchase. |
I've used seatbelt harnesses with my furbabies for years now. My old dog used to come running when he saw his, lifting his left leg automatically so we could put it on. My last two had harnesses from the local PetSmart, but for Benson we went with Champion. I really like the attachment system for that one the best - it's flexible enough for lapbelts, shoulder belts, even pick-up truck beds, and it has a failsafe connection so if the buckle breaks, it stays solidly attached. I'm a real stickler for containment, whether crated or with seatbelts. Not only for her safety in an accident, but if I'm unconscious, I don't know how protective she would be. I'd hate for someone to have to hurt her so they could get close enough to treat my injuries. |
We do all hate to think about that awful time when an accident could happen but having 3 dogs in the car with me when I travel most times not just one it is something I have been forced to consider. I do make trips just around my subdivision so they can have their fun drooling out the sunroof and windows but the minute I hit the actual roads they have to go on lock down. I didn't used to be that way but my trainer told me a horrific story of herself getting into an accident and as Jonsey said the medical response couldn't treat her quickly because her boxer wouldn't let them near the car and he himself was injured. You all know Sonny is a mommy's boy so he insists on sitting in my lap which is in itself dangerous. Steel loves to sit on my son's lap on the passengers side which means he lays side ways with his feet on the floor and his head right in my son's face. Imagine if the air bag went off!!! So Steel is the only one who is o.k. with the seat belt and I imagine it is because he has had one since he was a baby. Skye tolerates it because she is just that kind of dog. Sonny is a disaster. Away from his mom and holy cow "chained" to a seat! How could I do such a thing?! He causes a huge ruckus and Steel usually cusses him out the entire ride! This story has made me that much more sure I am doing the right thing. We will keep on laughing at Sonny knowing it is for his own good keeping the rides short so he doesn't give himself a stroke. Thank goodness you are all o.k. and got home safely! |
