Keep at it. Around her, when I get the Paw it means, "This is really important"......like I have to pee! Or when she is realllly needy, "There's a storm coming this way...." |
Sonny and Steel both do this but for different reasons. I taught Sonny to shake. WRONG! He also does this fist bump thing with my oldest son. He is overly inclined to constantly use his right paw for everything. To talk, to get attention, to EVERYTHING. As you have said I have scratch scars all over my face, my arms, shoot they are everywhere! Steel on the other hand uses both arms, not just paws and it is more of just an attention getter. He does it mostly when you walk past and don't acknowledge him. The kids have been tripped and we all have been scratched. Nothing severe. Sonny's leave blood. Steel's do not, he is more gentle. I think this just goes to their personalities.... Steel isn't a get in your face kind of pup unless he wants a smooch. Sonny on the other hand lives crawled right up my butt! As for a resolution, I think you saw on the pink paw photo - the hair on their feet is a little long. I am not a neglectful doggie mom. It isn't so long that they can't feel their toe pads or that it gets tangled but it does cover their nails a little. I also don't mess around with the nail trimming. I'm all over it! I file them as much as they will let me so it isn't sharp. I don't have much concrete here for them to do it naturally so I do it with a people one. Several people ones! I used to have a mechanical pet one and I couldn't tell when I was getting close to the danger zone and the noise freaked Skye out so I dumped that. Of course I tell Sonny no when he "smacks" me in the face or wherever else but after teaching him to lift that paw for shaking or fist bumping I know it is confusing to him so I thought I needed to come up with something else. It is an infrequent act with Steel so I wasn't sure how to address it other than to say no. Yes, I still do that but I wanted the damage to stop immediately until he learned. His legs are so long, my kids need to watch where they are walking and slow down so they don't land on their faces! Steel still head butts because he can't slow his body down when he is walking or running. I will be very glad when he gains some control over that because we are all suffering bruises in very bad locations from that! He needs to get just a little taller or we need to move out of the way a little faster! |
If you don't want to have a pouty sleepie then you need to redirect the behaviour. Tinsley feels that she needs to do something so it will be paw you, pout or ......? Think about when the behaviour usually happens, what might Tinsley be trying to get from you? If she has your attention then she must want something else, a scratch or rub? Could you teach her to lie down for a belly rub or bring a toy for a game instead of pawing. You will likely have to put up with pouting at first as you want to extinguish the pawing by ignoring her completely so she doesn't get a reward for pawing which will keep her doing that behaviour. If she's scratching you then I would be inclined to get up and move away while completely ignoring her. That way she doesn't get your attention or whatever else she is trying to tell you about and as long as you don't make eye contact or talk to her even to say no the behaviour isn't rewarded. Just so you're forewarned often just before they stop the behaviour it gets briefly worse so if you have a couple of days where Tinsley is pawing at you a lot don't give up, as she is likely to be about to. And/or the pouting might become the mega-sulk of the century too. Hang in there she's testing you. Good luck whatever you try. |
