Scissoring

They are clean and brushed out and ready to be trimmed. They look like woolly mammoths. Does anyone have any suggestions for how short I should trim the legs? I am pretty good at the feet now, and I know that the legs should look like pillars, but how long should the hair be? And if anyone has any suggestions on how to do the chest and the sides without horizontal scissor marks showing up, I welcome any advice! I don't want them to look like they have the equivalent of a 'bowl' cut.

I'm too nervous to try full on scissoring
To stop the horizontal marks on legs you trim with the scissors vertical pointed down or up the leg. Never across horizontal to the ground like when you're trimming feet. Length is up to you and how much dirt and/or dematting you fancy.
I've only ever used thinning shears on chest. And sides I've just shortened and neatened them by trimming along the bottom.
Good luck.
I have begun to full-body scissor Oscar, rather than use clippers. His back end has deteriorated to the point where he can't stand long enough for a clip down, :( nor can he repeatedly stand up and lay down to complete the process. And because of his propensity for growing major cooties on his skin, I have to clean and disinfect the clippers constantly, even though he is the only dog that they have ever been used on.

I find it's easier just to scissor his whole body. We can do it while he's laying down. I can do different parts at different times. Also, I can scissor him BEFORE a bath, which is great, as opposed to the clippers, which need to be used on a clean dog. Oscar usually sleeps while I trim away. :D

Mim's advice was good for the legs. Trim with the scissor end pointed up or down, vertically, to eliminate the "bowl haircut" look. I actually do the same on the chest, hips, butt, and sides, with the scissors usually pointed down, but always vertical. When I am scissoring his back, I point the scissors toward his head or his butt.

Now keep in mind, I am doing this while he is laying down, so my perspective can be off a bit, but he actually looks pretty decent, if I do say so myself. (Where is the emoticon for patting myself on the back? 8) ) At the very least, he doesn't look completely ridiculous.

Good luck!

Well, I tried it, and the cutting with the scissors pointing down was very good advice! Karen also sent me some video of Murphy being scissored, which was very helpful. The girls look fine, but I still think that they could use more taken off, especially the chest. In a Facebook post, Dawn used the word 'Yak' to describe the look they were sporting. :cow: Sadly she was right! So I did one cut yesterday and will go over them again and post some pictures. My arms hurt. Why didn't we just get wash and wear dogs? A beagle, or a nice basset?
Because those wash and wear type dogs shed short, pointy hairs that work their way into everything......including the seats, carpets and fabric interior of your car, between the sofa cushions, in the sofa cushion fabric etc, etc, etc never to be removed.
It's a case of chose your bugbear. :D

Good point. I forgot about visiting short haired dog folks and feeling like you were always sitting on a pin cushion.

Hey, it's what we do here. Kdog doesn't get to chew on long hair, is warm enough and doesn't look like a nekkid tailess greyhound......OK, "phat" greyhound.

Winter she gets to have longer hair.
Virginia did get a puppy cut. We went for a therapy dog visit at the nursing home and they went crazy over her new cut. She wiggled her bum like crazy and enjoyed all of the loving she received. I swear she knew that she looked cute in her new hairdo. And she does look like a fat greyhound! That is what I have been calling her all week!
